Similar to his approach with Syria, President Obama announced today that the Ukrainian government would face “consequences” if it crosses “the line” in its response to the mayhem in Kiev.

In his statement given during a summit in Mexico, Obama also claimed that “a large majority of Ukrainians are interested in an integration with Europe.”

“I want to be very clear as we work through these next several days in Ukraine that we’re going to be watching closely and we expect the Ukrainian government to show restraint, to not resort to violence in dealing with peaceful protestors,” he stated. “We’ve also said we expect peaceful protestors to remain peaceful and we’ll be monitoring very closely the situation, recognizing that with our European partners and the international community there will be consequences if people step over the line.”

“So the United States will continue to engage with all sides in the dispute in Ukraine and ultimately our interest is to make sure the Ukrainian people can express their own desires and we believe a large majority of Ukrainians are interested in an integration with Europe and the commerce and cultural exchanges that are possible for them to expand opportunity and prosperity.”

When mentioning an “integration with Europe,” Obama is referring to the European Union, which is currently imploding economically.

He also used similar rhetoric back in 2012 when discussing the ongoing conflict in Syria.

“We have been very clear to the Assad regime, but also to other players on the ground, that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized,” the president said to NBC News.

He later denied making that statement.

“First of all, I didn’t set a red line,” Obama told reporters last September. “The world set a red line.”

So either he was lying or he was admitting that he’s simply a puppet for global interests.

That said, his statement today does raise concerns that Obama is considering military action in Ukraine just as he did in Syria.

For one, his administration has already announced that it may enact sanctions against Ukraine.

“We are talking about the possibility of sanctions or other steps with our friends in Europe and elsewhere,” Secretary of State John Kerry said earlier today, referring once again to the EU.

And previously, the White House placed 20 Ukrainian officials on a visa blacklist, preventing them from traveling to the U.S.

The protests in Kiev erupted after Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich decided to strengthen economic relations with Russia rather than the EU.
