Magic says Sterling doesn’t have “right” to own team for allegedly making hurtful remark

Magic Johnson, the former basketball player who owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, says Donald Sterling, the owner of the Los Angeles Clippers, shouldn’t own a team because he is racist – or rather, an alleged racist.

“There’s no place in our society for it, and there’s no place in our league,” Johnson told ABC/ESPN. “He’s put his own team in a tough situation. So I believe that once Commissioner Silver does all his due diligence, gets all the information gathered, he’s gotta come down hard. [Sterling] shouldn’t own a team anymore. And he should stand up and say, ‘I don’t want to own a team anymore.’ Especially when you have African Americans renting his apartments, coming to the games, playing for him, coaching for him. This is bad for everybody.”

“I think we are going to have to look at your right to own this team,” Johnson said.

Keep in mind Sterling is so far an alleged racist. He purportedly criticized a former girlfriend for posing in a photo with Johnson. The photo was posted on Instagram.

Sterling was taped surreptitiously by the woman. She is being sued by the Sterling family and had “told Mr. Sterling that she would ‘get even’” with him.

Is Magic Johnson suggesting Sterling should forfeit ownership of the LA Clippers? If so, who will pay him for the team? Sterling bought the Clippers for $12.5 million in 1981. It was valued at $575 million in 2004 by Forbes magazine.

Should somebody lose money because of an alleged hurtful remark? Should people be driven in destitution because they say mean things about this race of that particular tribe?

Instead of stealing the team, the NBA may simply disassociate itself from Sterling and the Clippers, thus driving the team out of business. The NBA is, after all, a monopoly. If a team is excluded from the association (the monopoly), it can no longer compete against other NBA teams or play basketball in premier venues.

More than likely, Sterling will get the Mark Cuban treatment. He will be suspended and fined millions but will continue to own the team. If this happens, who will get the fines? Well, the NBA monopoly, of course. Fines usually go to charities which means the monopoly can avoid paying a certain amount of taxes. In other words, you and I will pay more to make up the difference. This is business as usual in America. Ask General Electric.

As should be expected, the race baiting ambulance chasers are jumping on the wagon. On Sunday, Al Sharpton, the one-time FBI informant, said “You cannot have someone own an NBA team in this country and have these kinds of attitudes.”

Obama commented on the alleged incident, too. “When ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don’t really have to do anything, you just let them talk. That’s what happened here,” he said from Malaysia. He said “the United States continues to wrestle with the legacy of race and slavery and segregation… That’s still there, the vestiges of discrimination. We’ve made enormous strides, but you’re going to continue to see this percolate up every so often.”
