Mr Obama’s haul dwarfed the $34m collectively pulled in by the Republican candidates, but he lagged in one sector – finance.
Mr Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, who raised $18.3m for the June quarter, beat Mr Obama in New York state, where many bankers remain angry at presidential criticism of the sector after the financial crisis.
“There is an enthusiastic response on the other side of the phone when I call on behalf of [Romney],” said Lewis Eisenberg, a longtime Republican fundraiser and an executive at Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, ahead of the release of the figures. “Obama still has his supporters on Wall Street but Romney has made substantial inroads.”
According to FEC data, Goldman Sachs executives gave Mr Romney about $240,000 in the three months to June 30, while Mr Obama got about $10,000 from employees of the company.
