US President-elect Barack Obama says he is prepared to offer Iran economic incentives to stop its nuclear programme, but he also warned that sanctions could be toughened if it refuses.
Dealing with Tehran’s nuclear programme will be one of his toughest foreign policy challenges when he moves into the White House in January.
The West has accused Iran of trying to build a nuclear weapon, although Iran insists its programme is for purely peaceful purposes.
Speaking on the television programme Meet The Press, Mr Obama said: “We are willing to talk to them directly and give them a clear choice and ultimately let them make a determination in terms of whether they want to do this the hard way or the easy way.”
Iran last month signalled it was expanding its nuclear enrichment programme, an indication that it has no intention of bowing to Western pressure.

Mr Obama said: “We need to ratchet up tough but direct diplomacy with Iran, making very clear to them that their development of nuclear weapons would be unacceptable, that their funding of terrorist organisations, their threats against Israel are contrary to everything we believe in.
