Clinton also seen backing ‘nuclear umbrella’
President-elect Barack Obama intends to offer Israel a “nuclear umbrella” in the event of a nuclear strike by Iran, according to a defense source close to the administration quoted by an Israeli newspaper.
Under such an agreement, the United States would promise to use nuclear weapons against Iran should Israel be atomically attacked. Obama’s secretary of State, Sen. Hillary Clinton, promised a similar “massive response” should Israel come under attack during the Democratic presidential debates.
“The source, who is close to the new administration, said the US will declare that an attack on Israel by Tehran would result in a devastating U.S. nuclear response against Iran,” the paper Ha’aretz said Thursday.
The source quoted also said that the nuclear guarantee would be backed by a new and improved Israeli anti-ballistic missile defense system, which comes in addition to one the Bush administration helped deploy in the Negev.
Both the ballistic defense system and the comments may suggest that the incoming Administration believes that a nuclear Iran is inevitable.

Soon-to-be Secretary of State Clinton has also proposed that the nuclear shield be extended to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states if they drop their nuclear ambitions. The United States is a massive supplier of weapons and defense technology to Saudi Arabia; the Bush administration recently signed a $20 billion, 10-year deal.
The US is also a supplier of covert arms to Gulf Cooperation Council states, which include Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
A National Security Council official told Raw Story last year that the $20 billion Saudi deal — along with the covert arms programs — was aimed at propping up the monarchy and to isolate Iran.
“The Saudis see Maliki as the cat’s paw of Iran and they think we are actively supporting Maliki,” the NSC official said. “What the monarchy is actively worried about is that guys who got bloodied in Iraq will return home and overthrow them, and that would be very bad for us.”
Obama has said he’d negotiate with Iran and offered economic aid if they agreed to drop their nuclear program. Such a move is unlikely, as Iran sees nuclear weapons as a key element in protecting their country against foreign attack and increasing their presence on the world stage.
The paper quoted a “senior Bush administration official” as rebuking the nuclear guarantee.
“Who will convince the citizen in Kansas that the U.S. needs to get mixed up in a nuclear war because Haifa was bombed? And what is the point of an American response, after Israel’s cities are destroyed in an Iranian nuclear strike?”
Even so, Israel may no longer be able to expect “blank cheques” from Washington once president-elect Obama’s administration takes over in January, according to a former US ambassador to the Jewish state.
“The era of the blank cheque is over,” Martin Indyk, director of the Centre for Middle East Policy at the Brookings Institute, who is considered close to incoming secretary of state Hillary Clinton, said Sunday.

The deterrent value of the proposed retaliatory policy is questionable. Members of Iran’s leadership have stated some time ago that they think a nuclear hit on Iran would be a small price to pay for eliminating the Zionists.
It’s nice to think the Iranians wouldn’t get away with such a deed unpunished. Better, however, not to let them do the deed.

Of course Iran does NOT have nukes. If they pursued them, they wouldn’t go for quantity. Those who remember India and Pakistan before they acquired nuclear weapons will remember America was pulling similar political stunts. But not as severe as with Iran, as they were only ones to to be controlled by and then broken free of US interests. I believe if Iran ventures off the civilian nuclear energy track and develops a weapon, it would be for a stronger political voice in global politics, not to strike a neighbor. US government knows this quite well and doesn’t want any challengers in the region that they have so lovingly destroyed, destablized, and controlled. Obama’s comment of nuking is exactly while nuclear proliferation will continue. When politicians keep reaching for them as a tool, other’s will seek them. If one uses them in this modern era, I am certain everyone will settle their differences at onces and we can all call it a day. So let’s not only pray that doesn’t happen, but try to prevent it.

In anticipation of a nuclear attack, the Israelis should take a cue from Indiana Jones. They should all lock themselves in lead-lined refrigerators… Think about it. I still think that the US and Israel are more concerned about the cheap energy produced by legitimate nuclear power plants making countries like Iran more energy independent, and productive; than nuclear war.
And if “Really Truth” #26 thinks that the US is not the ally of Israel, how about getting all of the dual citizenship Israelis, especially those who served in the IDF, out of the US and our government. I am also tired of finding Israelis training our police and security forces so they can have the inside info on everything we do, even while harboring US criminals. There is something sick about governments and casinos hiring protection from a country that murdered sailors on an unarmed USS Liberty. I have been to Israel, and realize that the people are not the government, but there is a lot of arrogance that I have never seen anywhere else. Brzezinski, is a top advisor to Obama, and is not considered a friend by Israel. His approach with Carter was to negotiate a peace settlement which was also in the best interest of the U.S.
Of course peace is not in the best interest of the military-industrial complex and the global arms merchants, so those groups are expected to try to derail anything that would replace war and misery for millions with peace.

They had nowhere to go, so the United Nations created Israel out of a British territory. There is a great Paul Neumann Movie called Exodus from the early sixties. In that movie, the people who were referred to a “Palestinians” were the Jews. The Arabs were just that – Arabs. Calling Arabs Palestinians is the new propaganda created by our media. I agree with you, another war is looming on the horizon, I just worry that as has been the case through out history, the Jews will be scapegoat and persecuted.
