SNAP polls indicate Barack Obama easily won today’s second presidential debate against John McCain, who was in need of a game-changing moment to help resurrect his run for the White House.

During the 90 minute town-hall style meeting, the two White House candidates clashed repeatedly over their records – Senator Obama showing he was prepared to mix it up with Senator McCain, just as the sometimes pugnacious former Vietnam veteran is willing to hit opponents hard.

Like the last time the two debated, 10 days ago in Mississippi, Senator Obama appeared to hold it over Senator McCain on domestic issues, striking more empathetic tones amid a fierce economic downturn hitting the US economy. Senator McCain seemingly found his feet more on foreign policy as the debate wore on.

But the economy is king in this presidential campaign and post-debate polling by CNN indicated Senator McCain’s difficult position as a Republican at a time when a Republican-led White House has presided over the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression.

The CNN polls of undecided voters watching the debate said Senator Obama won the debate on the economy, with 59 per cent to 37. On who would best handle the current crisis on Wall Street it was a similar 20-point margin, Senator Obama 57 to 36.

Pundits believe if these kind numbers hold for Senator Obama – he has consistently held a significant lead on Senator McCain on the economy in national polls – the 47-year-old Illinois senator is on track to win the election on November 4.
