It’s time for a real Patriot Act that brings out the patriot in all of us. We propose universal civilian service for every young American. Under this plan, All Americans between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five will be asked to serve their country by going through three months of basic training, civil defense preparation and community service. …
Here’s how it would work. Young people will know that between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five, the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service. They’ll be asked to report for three months of basic civil defense training in their state or community, where they will learn what to do in the event of biochemical, nuclear or conventional attack; how to assist others in an evacuation; how to respond when a levee breaks or we’re hit by a natural disaster. These young people will be available to address their communities’ most pressing needs.
Emanuel and co-author Bruce Reed insist “this is not a draft,” but go on to write of young men and women, “the nation will enlist them for three months of civilian service.” They also warn, “[s]ome Republicans will squeal about individual freedom,” ruling out any likelihood that they would let people opt out of universal citizen service.
As chief of staff, Emanuel will not be in a position to directly introduce public policy, but his enthusiasm for compulsory service, combined with Barack Obama’s own plan to require high school students to perform 50 hours of government-approved service, suggest an unfortunate direction for the new administration.

It doesnt sound like slavery it sounds like what the states are supposed to do. If you look at your states constitution there are sections about the state militia. The militia is composed of every man 18 to 45 and is supposed to train within the states exactly the way they are proposing. They are supposed to arm those men also. Training is supposed to occur 2 times a year firing weapons etc… Unfortunately the state militias have been disregarded in favor of a government owned and controlled military force to be turned on the people in times of civil unrest or DISOBEDIENCE you filthy dogs. I say instead of military service we get back to militia service and training to keep the states safe and free from big brother. Obama is not going to be any different than Bush when it comes to big government and our rights. There is a reason why our presidents are all somehow related and hes know different. You thinks its a huge coincidence that Obama is cousins with both Bush and Cheney? These guys have big ideas and plan on carrying them out on the unsuspecting hoards of idiots in America. Sadly I think Obama is going to be able to talk the idiots into giving away their first born for the good of the country. He is a rock star you know.

That doesn’t really sound like a horrible plan to tell the truth. It’s not as if the youth are enlisted for military service. It sounds more like a trained militia, like Great199 said, which is actually more useful in fighting the NWO. Its not like they are underage Hitler Youth being indoctrinated. It’s teaching the civilians to handle things themselves and not rely so heavily on the government to hold their hand all the time.

there are several things wrong with the mandatory service. first of all it is mandatory, and that is force, it is slavery. secondly, they are drafting females as well as males, and they may be put in harms way and incur injuries and death. that is unbiblical and plain wrong. thirdly, once they are drafted whose to say they won’t extend their time in the service like they do with the national guard? This is communism, and exploiting the people as a labor and military source.

I actually think this sounds like an awesome idea – the training is local, and specific. This helps communities tackle problems more efficiently themeselves without having to rely on the federal government for everything. I also like the idea of community service being reckognized as being as valuable as military service (ie exchange for paying for college). I actually don’t see anything wrong with this plan. School is already compulsory, this just extends it into the area of disaster training so we can lend a hand to one another rather than waiting for uncle sam to save us.

Ok… heres my OPINION.. please have the common decency to not attack me. please if you have a different viewpoint I encourage you to try to prove your point but seriously people, make your statements with the intelligence you profess to having… Also, to get exactly what im saying, you need alittle knowledge about me..
Im 21, and have been a member of the US Army for over three years, I have and am again serving overseas in Iraq. I am very well versed in American and Global history, particularly well educated in warfare, political unrest, sociology, and psychology. Not just in my Idle time, But College educated. Also Im just as pissed and paranoid as all of you….
that being said…
I DO like the idea of a compulsory service. But as with everything, moderation and transparency are key… and ill list my reasons for clarity.
The idea of an 18-25 yr old compulsory service is a good idea to me becouse:::
1) Knowledge. a term of sevice gives you unprecidented insight into the workings of your government and that particulor orginization. Disaster preparedness. Emergency action. your own psysical and mental limits, and yes… weapons, vehicle, skillset training.
2)Discipline. I look at my peers and notice a lack of gumption and discipline. Military/Civil service can and likely will instill confidence and discipline in young people. dont view the term discipline negatively, the saying “i will teach you to fight after you learn WHEN to fight” also comes to mind.
3)Brotherhood. wouldnt it be nice to look across your generation and know that your peers had all undergone the same ordeal as you. like members of the military and the Veterans before them you could look around and say “you know what i went through”.
4)Duty. I feel that if you participate in you government you get a true feel for what you should truly fight for. the constitution! the bill of rights! your fellow Americans. NOT Citizens.. i dont speak of the incorporated America your SS card represents.
… But like I said MODERATION and TRANSPARENCY! give young people the right to opt out of military MOS’s that specify combat. if you dont believe in harming others, you shouldnt have to. there are thousands of other places you are welcome to fit in. Include Civil organizations like Police and Firefighters as options. Even allow organizations like the DOT and DOD as options. I know a number of aspiring black hats(hackers) that the DOD would drool over given the knowledge… and what hacker wouldnt love DOD supercomputing backing and basically a privateer commission to attack whole countries infrastructures?..
ALSO! If a time comes that unrest is necessary and we unify to depose the oligarcal stagnacy and manipulation of truth… it’d be nice if we all knew what we’re doing I dont want just any punk trying to fire an M-16… they might shoot me in the arse since i’ll be up front…
but i digress…
… given freedom of choice inside of it and proper civilian regulation I believe its a good idea
