Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert maintains that Tel Aviv is determined to continue the Gaza offensive despite a UNSC resolution.
“Israel has never agreed for any outside influence to decide on its right to defend its citizens,” said a Friday statement released by Olmert’s office.
It stressed the Israeli forces “will continue to operate in order to defend the citizens of Israel and will carry out the task it was given for the operation.”
The statement comes a day after the UN Security Council almost unanimously approved on Thursday a resolution for an “immediate” and “durable” ceasefire followed by the “full withdrawal” of Israeli forces from Gaza.

Fourteen out of the Council’s 15 members voted for the resolution which also demands “the unimpeded provision and distribution throughout Gaza of humanitarian assistance, including of food, fuel and medical treatment.”

Olmert rebuffed the UN resolution as impractical, saying it would not be respected by the Palestinian fighters who sustain rocket attacks on Israeli targets in the occupied West bank.
