Note: Jacek Szkudlarek is reporting for The Corbett Report live from Copenhagen, Denmark, the scene of the upcoming United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change conference. In the first of a series of reports that will include articles, interviews and videos, Jacek shares some details about the preparations that are currently underway for the conference.
Damage Control in Copenhagen: something is rotten in the state of Denmark
Danish media are reporting that foreign police forces will help Denmark with security for the upcoming UN summit in Copenhagen. German police cars will be helping to patrol the streets, and Swedish and Dutch contingents will be coming too.
German police will be supporting their Danish colleagues by stepping up controls at the German-Danish border crossings to prevent “undesirables” from reaching Copenhagen and demonstrating their opinions on manmade climate change. “Copenhagen’s citizens are going to see personnel carriers with ‘Polizei’ in the streets” warns the leading newspaper, “Berlignske.” Front pages of newspapers are carrying pictures of German anti-riot police cars juxtaposed with smoking chimneys. Bookmakers are taking bets on whether the police will be using water canons.
Meanwhile, Danish media are pretending that the climategate scandal has not taken place at all. It is a non-event. That the leading climate resarchers have by all appearences changed the data in order to convince the world that the globe is warming is not important for Danish journalists. Nor is it a problem for the organizers.
Instead, all the media outlets in Copenhagen are full of vacuous details about the upcoming summit. “Where is Obama going to sleep? Maybe in Oslo.” “Schwarzenegger is coming.” “Denmark is going to earn a lot of money due to green technology—and save the Earth at the same time. How wonderful!” The journalists are outdoing each other to describe this meeting and its importance in the most glowing terms.
The website of the Danish state-owned TV network does not mention the CRU scandal at all. For the Danish counterpart to The New York Times, it is business as usual.
All the media are singing in unison that manmade global warming may be even more catastrophic than originally predicted if world leaders are unable to sign a treaty at the conference. They are now reporting that scientists are warning of a seven degree rise in temperature by 2100 unless a comperehensive agreement is made this month.
Some newspapers have covered the climategate scandal briefly, in small print. The tone of this coverage is quite clear: the hackers are criminals who deserve to be punished and the scientists are their blameless victims. They also imply that the timing of this leaked information—coming right before discussions on the Copenhagen treaty, which they call “the most crucial decision since the Second World War”—is suspicious, and that it is designed to ‘muddy the waters’ and obscure the broad consensus on manmade climate change.
I happen to have been subjected to communist propaganda for almost 30 years of my life. I recognize the rhetoric. This is the Soviet “PRAVDA” speaking again. It’s in a new, shiny package as opposed to the grey-black original, but make no mistake: The communists are at the helm again and it is going to be very hard to explain to them that they just may be, perhaps a little wrong.
God help us all.
