Thousands of regular soldiers are to be replaced on the front line by part-time reservists to save money.
Defence Secretary Liam Fox will today set out controversial plans for combat units to become heavily reliant on the Territorial Army as 17,000 regular soldiers are cut.
Ahead of an anticipated backlash, Dr Fox was forced to insist the nation’s security would not depend on a ‘Dad’s Army’, but his plans will see the country’s 36,000 reservists – who hold down civilian jobs when they are not on duty – pushed into increasingly dangerous service.
Dr Fox will slash the Army from 101,000 full-time soldiers to 84,000 by 2020, its smallest size since the Boer War. Under his plans, about 30 per cent of front-line soldiers are expected to be reservists within the decade.
