For $70,000 (£42,000), it may not seem like a very good deal: all you get is a polished silver box containing a USB drive on a black velvet tray.
It is the information that is on the drive, however, that counts.
In fact, the data is so valuable that the silver box has become the latest must-have accessory for some of the wealthiest individuals on the planet. So far, fewer than a hundred members of the global elite have managed to get their hands on one — including a handful of Britons, The Times has learnt — and the waiting list is growing by the month.
The USB drive contains a digital version of its owner’s human genome, sequenced and decoded and ready to be browsed on a home computer. It is hoped that such information could soon tell an individual what he or she is likely to die of — and, by extension, what can be done to put off the day of reckoning.

Not sure I understand this.. this article is implying that the human genome is essentially encrypted data that almost reads like a book of the humans health. Groundbreaking info if true – but I’d like to see the science behind it, sounds like a far-fetched idea without it.

Ground breaking medical research has proven genes do not control behaviour and have very little to do with the development of diseases.
An organisms _response_ to the environment is the primary control of an organisms cellular behaviour, and transitively, the organisms overall behaviour.
For Human beings, it is the BELIEF SYSTEM that controls behaviour. It is BELIEF SYSTEM that, via a complex sequence of biochemical processes, eventually ACTIVATES or DEACTIVATES genes within the cell nucleus.
The “cancer gene” only gets activated when a specific environmental signal enters the persons experience. It usually correlates with a psycho-emotive-spiritual event and triggers the subconcious mind to activate this gene.

The human genome can be viewed as a book or blueprint, but not necessarily for health. Just like a home has a blueprint, so do we. Your blueprint can show a ranch-style home with a brick exterior. Your actual home depends on the construction materials used and the skill of the builders. In other words, the genome provides a blueprint for your essential features, while your actual features depend on your environment. It’s the nature versus nurture argument.
The connection between genes and health is still uncertain. For example, your blueprint for the ranch home may require walls. If genes cause all health problems, then your blueprint may call for toxic fume-emitting Chinese drywall. If the environment causes all health problems, then your blueprint calls for normal drywall, and yet the builders try to save a dollar and install the toxic drywall.
I’m assuming that the elites hope to live longer. Unfortunately for them, we don’t know all the bad genes and most importantly, we don’t know how to remove the bad genes.
Mild caloric restriction has been identified in every model organism as the best way to extend life span. Just google: life span extension and caloric restriction for more information.

So I should mention that lately more companies are using swirling images of what appear to be DNA double helix molecules in many TV commercials.
