Your New Reality
Tuesday, July 14, 2009
For a writer who, decades ago, so accurately catalogued today’s high surveillance, video screen drenched reality, Philip K Dick left very little in the way of audio recordings or videos. The following short clips of PKD come from an interview he gave while attending the Metz festival in France, in 1977 :
The movie being discussed is Richard Linklater’s book-accurate, beautifully hypnotic depiction of PKD’s A Scanner Darkly.

Yes, “Flow My Tears the Policeman Said” and “Pinultimate Truth” should be mandatory reading. In the latter, elites stage a world war to drive the rabble underground, into bunker cities, where they live forever under the disinformation of the elites. The elites, while telling the rabble that the surface is unlivable and the war is raging, are actually converting the surface into their own private Edens protected by private robot armies. One man manages to escape the bunker and see the Truth going on on the surface. Meanwhile the elites have time travel capabilities and go back in time to plant fake artifacts to be found later so that history can be rewritten and they can be deified. Very good stuff from PKD, as good or better than Orwell or Huxley in my opinion.

There are several other future prediction books and videos:
Anthony Hyman – The Coming of the Chip – “A tiny fragment of Silicon that will change your life beyond recognition … For better or for for worse?”
BBC Horizon had a episode called “Now the Chips are Down” which discussed the advances in microprocessor technology and how best industry could adapt. It featured a panel of three representatives from academia, industry and from the skilled workers union. The union guy was the one sitting in the middle, holding a lit cigar in the studio. Every person had their own solution: Industry guy: consortiums should be funded to investigate uses – but they should concentrate on complete products (from hardware design to high-cost support contracts), academic: more research needs to be funded to investigate potential applications. Union guy: Of course there is going to be change, but who is going to pay for the retraining?
In retrospect, the actual solution was provided by Sir Clive Sinclair, who created home computers like the ZX80 which gave every person the chance to find their own uses.

Reality is that which, when you stop believing in it, doesn’t go away.

It is sometimes an appropriate response to reality to go insane.

The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.

Rent or buy the DVD of A Scanner Darkly, and watch it! It includes a cameo of Alex Jones with a bullhorn. Read the book, too. It’s even better than the movie.
