Deputy Assistant Commissioner Stephen Kavanagh said today the police will use baton rounds and plastic bullets if the vandalism in Britain continues. “Through the night the Commissioner did absolutely consider that as one of the tactics available to use, a tactic used if deemed necessary,” he said.
Report that plastic bullets may be used at 1:05 minute mark in above video.
The use of plastic bullets is usually considered one step below the introduction of live ammo .
The British pioneered the use of plastic bullets. They were beta tested in Northern Ireland where it was discovered they were lethal at close range. British security forces using the “non-lethal” projectiles killed fourteen people, including nine children. The extensive use of plastic bullets led to Emma Groves founding the United Campaign Against Plastic Bullets .
The state routinely introduces plastic bullets and other “non-lethal” ammunition against unruly crowds and protesters. They were used against protestors at anti-globalization protest in Quebec in 2001 and authorized for G8 summit protests in Gleneagles, Scotland in July 2005.
Baton rounds are bean bag, plastic or rubber bullets.
British police announced the use of plastic bullets after David Cameron called for more “robust” police action amid criticism from residents that looting mobs are not being challenged, according to the Daily Mail .
