Possible tornado wallops Bridgeport, region

Bridgeport and Stratford were under a state of emergency late Thursday after a powerful line of thunderstorms with tornado-like winds collapsed nine buildings, downed trees, snapped power lines and flipped over a tractor-trailer on Interstate 95.

While no one was killed, at least 25 people were injured and many buildings heavily damaged. More than 26,000 people lost power and hundreds of trees were uprooted or blown down, scarring the landscape of the Park City’s iconic parks.

With the widespread damage and threat of more severe weather, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch ordered a curfew, starting at 5:30 p.m. and continuing into the night. “Another line of storms may hit and we need everyone off the streets,” Finch wrote on his Twitter account.

In Stratford, Mayor John A. Harkins also ordered a state of emergency, urging residents to “stay indoors for their own safety and to facilitate the cleanup.” He ordered residents “not go near any downed trees or power lines and do not interfere with crews who are attempting to clear the roads and restore power. Police will be on patrol, especially in Lordship, to ensure compliance.”
