Hosni Mubarak today fled to the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, according to reports in Egypt.
As the biggest crowds of protesters to date besieged Cairo, it was claimed that the President had left the capital with his family.
It is understood that he flew from a military base on the outskirts of the city.
There was no official confirmation, however, and no sign he is yet willing formally to quit office before September’s elections, despite last night giving up most of his powers to his deputy.
TV news station Al Arabiya reported that Mr Mubarak had left for an ‘undisclosed location’, but was not thought to have fled the country. It is claimed he flew from a military base on the outskirts of Cairo.
