FORT WAYNE – It isn’t difficult to tell who recycles – a simple drive down any residential street the night before collection day will show who is putting out bins and who isn’t.
But after the collection is finished and the bins are put away, the statistics vanish. That changes next year when Fort Wayne will have residents use new, larger recycling carts fitted with RFID tags.
That’s Radio Frequency Identification tags to those unfamiliar with the technology that would allow the city to track the carts’ location and use.
Some communities are using this technology to reward people for recycling or to punish those who don’t. But city officials said the information it collects from the recycling carts will be used only to track the city’s cart inventory and target education.
