Radioactive water leaking from crack in nuclear complex in Japan; officials looking for more leaks

Toxic water spewing into Japan’s shores was traced back to a new crack found Saturday in a tsunami-struck nuclear power plant, authorities said.

The radioactive water is leaking from an 8-inch crack in the maintenance pit of Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear complex, according to the Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant’s operator.

“This could be one of the sources of seawater contamination,” said TEPCO spokesman Takashi Kurita.

Still, he warned, “There could be other similar cracks in the area, and we must find them as quickly as possible.”

The plant has been releasing radioactivity since the March 11 earthquake disabled power in parts of the country.
