“Rebellion will not be tolerated”

A creepy 1960’s national anthem video features subliminal messages encouraging the viewer to “obey,” “consume” and “trust the US government.” It sounds like something straight out of They Live, but is the clip genuine or a hoax?
The video contains all of the following messages. While it’s difficult to read them all at normal speed, slowed down analysis reveals the following;
- TRUST THE US GOVERNMENT
– GOD IS REAL GOD IS WATCHING
– BELIEVE IN GOVERNMENT GOD
– REBELLION WILL NOT BE TOLERATED
– OBEY CONSUME OBEY CONSUME
– BUY MKULTRA BUY MKNAOMI
– WORSHIP CONSUME OBEY BELIEVE
– DO NOT QUESTION GOVERNMENT
Since the video was first released on YouTube in 2011, speculation has raged as to its authenticity. Many have pointed out that one of the subliminals refers to ‘Naomi’ – the name of the original uploader of the clip – and is therefore a hoax. Others claim this could refer to a CIA program called Project Naomi which began in the 50’s.
There is another version of the video which does not include the subliminals, strongly suggesting that they were added later, but some have pointed out that the “original” is in fact the one that contains the subliminals since it has a wider field of view.
Claims that the clip was created for some kind of viral marketing campaign don’t stand up because it has not been used in that context since it was first released.
However, the fact that the subliminal slogans in the video so closely resemble those featured in the 1988 science fiction film They Livesuggest that the clip is most likely a clever hoax, although final confirmation remains elusive.
