  • Red Cross finds Bush administration guilty of war crimes

In a secret report last year, the Red Cross found evidence of the CIA using torture on prisoners that would make the Bush administration guilty of war crimes, The New York Times reported Friday.

The Red Cross determined the culpability of the Bush administration after interviewing prisoners at Guantanamo Bay, according to the article.

Prisoner Abu Zubaydahwho said he had been waterboarded, “slammed against the walls” and confined in boxes “so small he said he had to double up his limbs in the fetal position.”

    (Article continues below)

The information comes from a new book written by Jane Meyer, who has frequently published articles concerning counter-terrorism in The New Yorker.

The book is titled “The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned Into a War on American Ideals,” and will be released next week.

Mayer cited “sources familiar with the report” to explain the confidential document as a warning “that the abuse constituted war crimes, placing the highest officials in the U.S. government in jeopardy of being prosecuted.”

The report was submitted to CIA last year and concluded that American interrogation methods are “categorically” torture that violates both domestic and international law, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow reported Friday.

Although the CIA had already admitted to the use of waterboarding, Meyer says in the book that several CIA officers confirm the findings of the Red Cross, including the other forms of torture mentioned.

Maddow called George W. Bush a “torture-approver-in-chief who has yet to be held to account for anything” and said that congressman Dennis Kucinich had reintroduced his articles of impeachment against the president.

Maddow questioned constitutional law expert Johnathan Turley about the development.

“The problem for the bush admin is that they perfected plausible deniability techniques,” Turley said. “They bring out one or two people that are willing to debate on cable shows whether waterboarding is torture and it leaves the impression that its a closed question.

“It’s not. It’s just like the domestic surveillance program that the federal court said just a week ago was also not just a closed question.”

When asked by Maddow if the chances are now greater that Bush will be prosecuted now or after leaving office by the international community, Turley compared the situation to Serbia in the early 90s.

“I’d never thought I would say this, but I think it might in fact be time for the United States to be held internationally to a tribunal. I never thought in my lifetime I would say that.”

    1. Gregory Fegel Says:

It is not only torture which the US is doing that is illegal.

The Iraq war is illegal under international law, under the UN Charter, under US law, and also according to the Nuremburg Court, which clearly defined ‘making aggressive war’ as a War Crime.

The Nuremburg Court also decreed that ‘following orders’ is not an excuse for fighting in an illegal war. What that means is that all of the soldiers who fight in an illegal war are guilty of a War Crime.

It also means that all of the US soldiers who have fought in the Iraq war are War Criminals.

      Mr fegel…
      you are very spot on…

they should all be arrested and put in cuba… set up a jail there, for the war criminals…

i will be very suprised if some guy doesn’t kill mr bush…
mr bush will not die of old age…. he will die a horrible death.
the most hated person in the world, is mr bush….
maybe some iraqi kid that lost his whole family because of mr bush’s war… will deliver the bullet

or god will bring death to him, if mr bush dies because of an accident… then our heavenly father has done us a favour…

I agree. So now who do I talk to in the Hague about getting king george indicted? Oh yeah, and his brain cheney too.

    4. Gregory Fegel Says:

      nikoli:
It is a matter of personal nature and of moral character that the good people of this world seledom kill anyone, even when it is fully justified for them to do so. Hence, State-sanctioned mass murderers like Bush and his ilk usually go scot-free. It is highly unlikely that Bush will be Impeached, and if he is, he will likely be pardoned by his successor. That is how the US government works to protect its criminals and evil doers.

Recently I read a marvelous suggestion that someone made regarding this matter, which I think would make a great plot for a political suspense novel. The good people would form their own secret global organization that performs assassinations of the evil people. Such an organization would need to operate in even greater secrecy than the CIA, with a secret ‘hit list’ and a high level of ‘compartmentalization’.

Obviously, like the CIA, there would need to be a number of ‘front organizations’ that raise and distribute funds. Another level would choose targets, timing, and methods. The actual operatives would act alone under the supervision of a ‘handler’, the same way that the CIA operates. Just like in the Chuck Barris novel that was made into a Hollywood film, called “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.” Another level of this ‘alternative CIA’ assassination organization would produce propaganda and disinformation, that would serve to implicate the CIA or various government intelligence agencies or police in the assassinations in order to ‘muddy the waters’.

You can put his dad, the clintons, the neocons and congress on that list too. There are only a handfull of legislaters that aren’t guilty. The fact the war was bogus was clear even before it started. Let see if we can borrow Frances guillotine for a while.

    6. Rick Says:

Cutting off heads, putting people in woodchippers, and murdering civilians is alright, but trying to get information out of these “war criminals” is bad? Blind hatred and stupidity on parade here.

We need to pull our troops out of the world and get out of the UN. The 20th century proved how well off everyone was without the US. It would be fun watching them try.

    7. Dimarco Says:

I feel that too many of us believe that International law and that legal forum is our only chance due to the corruption of our Congress and their ineptitude to fulfill their Oath of Office. I say NAY to allowing the foreign venues of law to become the Supreme Law of OUR LAND!!! They are Treaties!! And though law as well, the Constitution is OUR Supreme Law of the LAND. If our Elected Representatives cannot, hell, will not enforce the limits of Government through Impeachment, then it is up to the final branch of Government, We The PEOPLE to Declare our Independence again and to arrest ALL those who have failed in their Oath of Office and present our legal complaints to the Federal Judiciary – the Supreme Court of the Land to hear our legal claims.

If they too fail to fulfill their Oaths, I’ll leave the final options in view of our Declaration of Independence.

    8. Gregory Fegel Says:

      Dimarco:
Did you know that, according to US law, ALL treaties that the US government signs automatically become US law? A lot of good that did the Native Americans — and that’s no joke, because the fact is that US leaders have continually disregarded US law and the US Constitution. And the majority of the US population lets them get away with it. The REAL heros and Patriots are not in the US military or the US government. Instead, they are the dissidents, protesters, and Revolutionaries. Even Thomas Jefferson said so.

    9. albert Says:

The totality of the military war crimes of the USA make those of even the nazis pale in comparison. There has never been a time when racist torture and mass murder was not at the forefront of american military strategy. The founding fathers of the USA were almost to a man pedophiles, rapists and racists, since the uses they put ’sub-humans’ to didn’t ‘count’ (remember, Washington DC was built by slaves, the men with zero life expectancy beyond their peak working years, the women raped daily, if they were lucky enough not to be selected for medical experimentation).

There is an evil at the core of the foundation of the USA unlike any in the world today, and in reality, the US has never deviated from its initial racist origin.

There is a paradox here. Masses of ordinary americans truly believe in the written statements contained within the Constitution, and other historic founding documents. These words, taken at face value, describe principles of extreme justice, freedom and fairness.

What matters is which will win out. The blackest evil that has always existed at the heart of the US power structure and military. Or the purest good contained within the written principles on which the nation of the United States was supposed to function.

Will good words resurrect any of the tens of millions of Humans slaughtered by the USA across time? Will good words erase the trauma in the minds of those hundreds of millions of Humans that are living victims of America’s continuous acts of atrocity across the world.

Bush carries out war crimes on a scale only limited by fears of political consequence. As the fear recedes, the war crimes magnify. This sounds like a trite observation, but consider it for a moment. Allow your political masters to use any tools defined by atrocity, racism, and hate, and when do you think these methods will go away?

The opposite happens. By their very nature, such methods of the most depraved evil require constant justification. And in seeking this justification, the use, and depravity, must become greater and greater.

In previous times, the leaders of the US, even at their worst, had to be two-faced. Pretend not to be relying on the tools of purest evil. The people of the US thus always provided a counter-balancing moral force that tended to wind down such disgusting programs after a few years or so.

Today is different. Take torture. Every newspaper, radio station, TV broadcaster, and film company in the USA has played its part in convincing the public that torture is an essential tool. Through a concerted program of propaganda, much of which has consisted of ‘acting out’ such messages in popular TV shows and films, there is hardly an american left who doesn’t think that torture can be frequently required and justified.

You americans here already know that you government will use nuclear weapons as soon as it can sell the idea to the degree that it has sold torture. The same goes for chemical weapons. The same goes for the biological plagues that your scientists are targetting at unique gene combinations in certain ethnic groups. You know that your nation, under ‘republicans’ OR ‘democrats’ is the equivalent of the worst psychopathic serial killer, driven by the thoughts of new forms of suffering that it can inflict on innocent victims.

Only a revolution could correct the moral core of controlling US power structures now, but no revolution is possible at this phase. The revolution awaits a post-World War scenario, where most parts of the world, and certainly the USA, have been ravaged by the consequences of nuclear strikes, widespread radiological poisoning, and man-made plagues. You see, I promise you, regardless of american strength now, or politcial allies, or whatever, the rest of the world will no more tolerate the USA coming out of a global war of its own making victorious, than it did WW2 Germany or Japan.

However, how much comfort can you take from the thought “when we have been totally ruined, the best of us still alive will rise up and take power”.

    10. ashnbell Says:

“The Nuremburg Court also decreed that ‘following orders’ is not an excuse for fighting in an illegal war. What that means is that all of the soldiers who fight in an illegal war are guilty of a War Crime.”

I think if the Milgram experiments had been performed prior to the Nuremburg trials they might have phrased their opinion about following orders a little differently.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment

Fact of the matter is that Milgram showed quite conclusively that the majority of people, who find themselves in the position where someone who they see as being an authority figure is encouraging them to torture someone, would do what was asked of them.

2/3 of the participants in milgrams first experiment were talked into inflicting what they thought were 450 Volt Electric shocks to other people. And the people they thought they were torturing weren’t “terror suspects” that they’d been conditioned into fearing and hating for years, they were just people like them, who they had no reason to think had ever done anything that could be classified as “terrorism”.

As far as i’m concerned if someone is legitimately duped into believing that torturing someone on the orders of a superior is the correct course of action for them to take in the situation then it’s at least understandable, even if it isn’t an excuse.

When the orders were filtering down through the nazi hierarchy in the 30’s and 40’s, i dare say that those at the top were surprised at how little resistance there was to their more extreme orders.

The same can not be said for the nazis doing the torturing these days. They would have had full knowledge of Milgrams experiments and would have known that their bidding was going to be done.

    14. Gregory Fegel Says:

Indict US Government Officials Who Planned and Carried Out 9/11 Attacks

A preponderance of evidence shows that the highest officials of the Bush Administration, in collusion with many other officials from the Pentagon, CIA, FBI, FEMA, NSA, NORAD, airline executives, and others, together planned and committed the horrible attacks of 9/11, which were subsequently blamed on some bogus “Arab highjackers.” The 9/11 attacks provided the excuse for the US government’s “War on Terrorism,” the chief purpose of which is for the USA to gain control of the lucrative oil fields of the Middle East. A secondary purpose is to increase taxation of Americans for Defense spending in support of the USA’s enormous Military/Industrial Complex, and a tertiary purpose is the justification of the enactment of Police-State measures within the USA under the umbrella of “Homeland Security.”

The Pentagon, CIA, FBI, and other agencies and officials of the US Government have perpetrated many crimes, assassinations, and bombings against US citizens and US interests during the past 45 years, including, but by no means limited to, the assassinations of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Robert Fitzgerald Kennedy, and Martin Luther King; the 1988 Berlin Disco bombing; the 1993 WTC bombing; the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing; and the anthrax letter attacks of October 2001. Since the end of World War Two, fanatic right-wing ideologues with corporate connections have gradually gained control of the US military, the US intelligence agencies, and the US government. Fascism in the USA is not merely a current threat posed by the George W. Bush Administration; it is an already accomplished situation that has been decades in the making.

The USA’s descent into fascism cannot be halted or stopped merely by electing a member of the Democrat Party to the Presidency or by electing a Democrat majority to Congress. The infiltration and control of the US government by right-wing extremists is far too advanced and complete — they manipulate our elected officials like puppets on a string, and many of our elected officials are themselves part of the fascist establishment. The right-wing takeover of the US government has been a gradual and very successful fascist coup that will not be reversed without a very serious struggle. Given the history of extreme and indiscriminate violence shown by the ruling junta, it appears quite likely to me that restoring democracy to the USA would inevitably require a violent armed struggle.

As a US citizen and as a human being, I personally view the killing of innocent people in foreign countries by the CIA and the US military in support of the economic interests of US corporations as totally immoral and intolerable, and I consider it my duty to oppose US aggression and Imperialism in any way that I can. There is nothing noble or ‘heroic’ about unprovoked military aggression and genocide.

I realize that there are some very worthy reasons to oppose capital punishment in many situations. However, it is also quite apparent to me that any show of clemency for the US government perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks leaves open the possibility that they and their sympathizers could revive their subversion of American democracy and their violence toward peace-loving Americans. That is why I advocate a policy of capital punishment without any mercy for the US government perpetrators of the 9/11 attacks and their allies.

George W., George H., Jeb, Neil, and Marvin Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Rice, Rove, Wolfowitz, Powell, Armitage, Ashcroft, Mueller, Tenet, Goss, Giuliani, Hayden, Chertoff, Baker and scores of other individuals working for the White House, CIA, FBI, FEMA, the Pentagon, NSA, NORAD, the airline industry, and the US news media together planned and executed the 9/11 attacks. All of the above-named and their accomplices need to be tried for Treason and Mass Murder, with the death penalty as the reward for their conviction of those crimes.

We need a Nuremberg-style trial for Treason and Mass Murder for all of the members of the US government, the US military, the US intelligence agencies, and their civilian accomplices in the airline industry and the news media who participated in the murderous crimes of 9/11. The death penalty should be applied to all of the principals and their accomplices, even if that means executing several hundred or even several thousand people, because crimes against the Republic of this magnitude cannot go unpunished, and the punishment must be extreme to send a message that the American people will not tolerate such Treason now or in the future. If allowed to remain unpunished and at liberty, these individuals represent a grave threat to the safety and security of all Americans. If convicted of the heinous crimes of 9/11, the death penalty is the only way to ensure that they or their allies will not somehow manage to attack America and Americans again. The executions should be performed in public and be televized for the entire world to witness.

No one in or out of the US government should be exempt from prosecution and capital punishment for the Treasonous attacks of 9/11. The planners and participants in the 9/11 attacks within the US government and their accomplices must not be allowed to protect themselves behind the specious excuse of “National Security.” The true security and survival of our Republic depends entirely on this.

Sasuke you are ignorant. There is no jesus christ, just the last throes of a failed soon to be extinct species called the human race. Everything on earth goes extinct. It’s been proven Jesus Christ in the Bible is fictional and there has never been any evidence of people wandering in the desert 40 years in the archeological record, or any strand of evidence of Moses existance. You believe in fairytales and reduce human problems to good vs. evil because you are an ignorant, dumb fool. You have just as much weakness as the greedy evil do, you just cover it up what you are – an animal.
