A renegade Afghan soldier killed three British troops during a joint patrol today in southern Helmand province.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai has apologised in writing after the soldiers – believed to be from the Gurkha regiment – were killed near Nahr-e Saraj.
Three more British soldiers were wounded when the gunman opened fire inside a military compound.
NATO said in a statement that three of its soldiers were killed in an attack in southern Afghanistan, but gave no further details.
‘If this is true, then it’s very regrettable,’ said Waheed Omer, spokesman for Afghan President Hamid Karzai.
‘If it is confirmed, it’s a very unfortunate attack and the government of Afghanistan will do everything to make sure the proper traitors are brought to justice.’
