Rights group: Israel uses incendiary bombs in Gaza

JERUSALEM — Human Rights Watch said Sunday that Israel’s military has fired artillery shells with the incendiary agent white phosphorus into Gaza and a doctor there said the chemical was suspected in the case of 10 burn victims who had skin peeling off their faces and bodies.
Researchers in Israel from the rights group witnessed hours of artillery bombardments that sent trails of burning smoke indicating white phosphorus over the Jebaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza. But they could not confirm injuries on the ground because they have been barred from entering the territory.
The chief doctor at Nasser Hospital in southern Gaza said he treated several victims there with serious burns that might have been caused by phosphorus. He said, however, that he did not have the resources or expertise to say with certainty what caused the injuries.

The substance can cause serious burns if it touches the skin and can spark fires on the ground, the rights group said in a written statement calling on Israel not to use it in crowded areas of Gaza.

Iran asks Islamic countries to severe ties with Israel

Tehran, Jan 12 (RIA Novosti) Iran Monday called upon Muslim countries to severe all their relations, including diplomatic and trade, with Israel as a protest against its military operation in Gaza Strip.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Manuchehr Motaki told reporters here that he had sent letters to his counterparts of a number of Islamic countries, urging them to take decision similar to what Venezuela and Mauritania had taken in the wake of the Gaza offensive.
‘In the letter that I sent today to my colleagues in a number of Islamic states, which unfortunately have political ties with the Zionist regime (Israel), and after pointing out which measures Venezuela and Mauritania had taken, I demanded that they cease relations with that regime,’ Manuchehr Motaki told journalists.
On Jan 9, Venezuela expelled Israeli Ambassador Shlomo Cohen and some of the embassy’s personnel as a protest against Israel’s military operation in the Gaza Strip. Mauritania also announced that it would recall its ambassador from Israel in protest.
The foreign minister also said one Islamic country, which he did not name, had already announced that ‘it will stop trade with Israel if others also take such measures’.
An Israeli newspaper reported Monday that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had rejected appeals by his defence and foreign ministers for an immediate halt to operations in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
Olmert is now believed to be planning to raise the issue of continuing military operations in the Gaza Strip with the country’s security cabinet in order to get support from key ministers and security chiefs.
Last week, Olmert dismissed UN Security Council Resolution 1860, which called for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Palestinian health ministry, at least 890 Palestinians, including 257 children and 68 women, have been killed and another 4,000 wounded in the more than two-week long Israeli assault on Gaza.
Israel’s casualties are estimated at 13, including 10 military personnel.

UN chief wants Gaza conflict halt
Palestinians have been warned to leave areas close to Hamas facilities
The UN secretary general has implored Israel and Palestinian militants to halt the fighting in Gaza immediately.
Ahead of a trip to the region to push for a truce, Ban Ki-moon said too many people had died and there had been too much civilian suffering.
His call came as Israeli ground forces and tanks moved deeper into urban areas and air strikes across the Gaza Strip continued for a 17th day.
Nearly 30 rockets or mortars were fired on Israel from Gaza on Monday.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said Palestinian militants will keep on feeling Israel’s “iron fist” as long as Hamas fires rockets at Israel.
But a senior Hamas leader, Ismail Haniya, said the group was “approaching victory”.
“After 17 days of this foolish war, Gaza has not been broken and Gaza will not collapse,” he said in a televised address from a secret location in Gaza.

Both Hamas and Israel rejected last week’s UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Palestinian medical sources say 910 people have been killed in Gaza so far, of whom 292 were children and 75 were women. Israeli officials say 13 Israelis, including three civilians, have been killed.
On Monday, casualty reports from Palestinian medics ranged from nine to 26 dead, while Israel said five of its soldiers had been injured, one of them seriously.
Israel is preventing international journalists from entering Gaza, making it impossible to independently confirm casualty figures.
‘Society destroyed’
“My message is simple, direct and to the point: the fighting must stop,” Mr Ban told a news conference in New York ahead of his departure on Tuesday for the Middle East.

“In Gaza, the very foundation of society is being destroyed: people’s homes, civic infrastructure, public health facilities and schools.”
His diplomatic tour will see talks with the leaders of Egypt, Israel and Syria as well as the Palestinian president in Ramallah.
However UN officials say he will not be meeting representatives of Hamas, and it is not clear whether he will go to Gaza itself during his week-long trip.
Meanwhile reports suggest diplomatic efforts between Egypt and Hamas in Cairo are progressing.
After meeting Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Middle East Quartet envoy Tony Blair said the elements were in place for a ceasefire agreement.
“I am hopeful we can put an agreement together but it’s going to have to be worked on very hard and it’s got to be credible,” he told journalists.

On Monday as Israel continued its air and ground offensive, Hamas said it had been involved in fighting with Israeli troops in several districts.

There were reports of fierce fighting around Gaza City ahead of the daily three-hour truce to allow aid deliveries to Gaza.
Some Israeli reservists are in action on the ground, but the army denied escalating the war to a “third phase” – an all-out push on Gaza City and other towns.
Overnight on Sunday fewer air strikes were carried out – 12 compared with as many as 60 on previous nights.
A military spokeswoman Maj Avital Leibovich said troops were continuing their advance into urban areas.
“Since the majority of the Hamas militants are pretty much in hiding in those places, mainly urban places, then we operate in those areas,” she told the Associated Press.
Reservists are reported to be securing areas gained in the fighting.

The chief military spokesman, Brig Gen Avi Benayahu, said thousands more – who would comprise a new, expanded phase in the ground operation if it was ordered – were still in training and had not been deployed.
Israel hopes the scale of its operation will greatly reduce the number of missiles fired from Gaza into southern Israel, while eroding support for Hamas.
As the fighting continued, a spokesman for the charity Save the Children said it was impossible for aid workers to do their jobs.
“We need the violence to stop. We need the attacks to stop. It’s only when that happens that we will be able to operate,” Benedict Dempsey said.
Aid agencies say Gaza’s 1.5 million residents are in urgent need of food and medical aid.

JERUSALEM (CNN) — The international group Human Rights Watch is accusing Israel of firing weapons containing white phosphorus into Gaza. The group demands that the alleged practice cease.
Israel is declining to say whether bursts like this over Gaza involve white phosphorus.
1 of 2 more photos » The group’s researchers in Israel “observed multiple air-bursts of artillery-fired white phosphorus over what appeared to be the Gaza City/Jabaliya area” on Friday and Saturday, the organization said on its Web site.
“Israel appeared to be using white phosphorus as an ‘obscurant’ [a chemical used to hide military operations], a permissible use in principle” under the laws of war, the HRW posting said.
“However, white phosphorus has a significant, incidental, incendiary effect that can severely burn people and set structures, fields, and other civilian objects in the vicinity on fire,” the posting said. “The potential for harm to civilians is magnified by Gaza’s high population density, among the highest in the world.”
HRW said the use of white phosphorus in Gaza would violate “the requirement under international humanitarian law to take all feasible precautions to avoid civilian injury and loss of life.”
Last week, an Israel Defense Forces spokesman told CNN: “I can tell you with certainty that white phosphorus is absolutely not being used.”
Now, however, Israeli officials have a different response to questions about the possible use of phosphorus: “Any munitions that Israel is using are in accordance with international law. Israel does not specify the types of munitions or the types of operations it is conducting.”
Still, a doctor familiar with the material said it is not possible to tell, based on pictures of burns, whether white phosphorus was responsible.
“Dead tissue pretty much looks the same,” said Dr. Peter Grossman, president of the Grossman Burn Center in Sherman Oaks, California.
The chemical “can burn down houses and cause horrific burns when it touches the skin,” said Marc Garlasco, senior military analyst at Human Rights Watch.

Since January 3, when Israel began its ground offensive in Gaza, news reports have circulated about the possible use of white phosphorus by the IDF.
HRW’s assertion was supported by munitions experts and some Palestinian doctors, including Nafiz Abu Sha’aban, who said the burns it caused were unlike anything he has seen in 27 years of practice. Watch footage of burn patients in Gaza
Though most severely burned patients have been sent to Egypt, the ongoing fighting has made it impossible to evacuate all of them, including one man with deep burns over 47 percent of his body, the doctor said.
White phosphorus is known to burn flesh down to the bone.
It’s intended to provide illumination or to create a smokescreen in battle. Under an international protocol ratified by Israel in 1995, the use of such incendiary weapons is allowed when “not specifically designed to cause burn injury to persons.”
There is no prohibition per se against white phosphorus in conflict. But the timing and location of its use are restricted.
For example, it is illegal under the protocol to use white phosphorus against any personnel, civilian or military. It can be directed only against military targets. International law says incendiary weapons cannot be used where civilians are concentrated.
A house north of Gaza City was hit Sunday by something that observers contend may have been white phosphorus.
“It’s been burning since one o’clock in the morning,” Munir Hammada told CNN 11 hours later. “If you move it with your feet, it reignites. You can’t put it out with water, only sand.”

I didn’t see this on this news site, and think it should have been taken more seriously:
Google the Cynthia McKinney, Free Gaza, CNN video for several videos showing the aftermath of Israeli patrol boat ramming and almost sinking the 60′ “Destiny” on medical aid mission to Gaza. The Israelis rammed the pleasure boat three times in international water with doctors, CNN correspondent, and McKinney plus crew on board.
The videos speak for themselves, but even reminded McKinney of the USS Liberty attack with the same cowardly operation on a defenseless vessel. The video shows how lucky they are to be alive, and the Israelis claimed it was an accident after following them for half an hour and then ramming 3 times. This should have received much more air time from the media whores.

Taking a short break from lashing out at the international media for reporting the growing civilian death toll in the Gaza Strip, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert spoke in detail about the events leading up to the US abstention from the United Nations Security Council’s vote on the Gaza Strip ceasefire.
“Early Friday morning the secretary of state was considering bringing the cease-fire resolution to a UNSC vote and we didn’t want her to vote for it.” Olmert said. “I said ‘get President Bush on the phone.’ They tried and told me he was in the middle of a lecture in Philadelphia. I said ‘I’m not interested, I need to speak to him now.’ He got down from the podium, went out and took the phone call.”
A beaming Olmert then described telling President Bush “the US cannot possibly vote in favor of this resolution,” and spoke with pride of how embarrassed US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was at having to abstain from voting for a resolution she helped to organize and gather support for.
The US abstention shocked diplomats, and made it easier for Israel to dismiss the ceasefire out of hand. At the time of the vote Rice declared that the United States supported the draft but could not vote for it because of their “special relationship” with Israel. Just days later Rice too was lashing out at the resolution as “unacceptable.”

This argument you’re putting on the Wikipedia to defend the Talmud wouldn’t have worked to clear Hitler or the Nazis. David Irving could have rewritten your passage and put in the word Nazi for Jew – and you can see that it would not have cleared the Nazis?

The very fact these tenets are still in the Talmud says everything – they are in no other central religious text. They are also not merely expansion or additions of a theological point.
They are the diametrical opposite of the beliefs of Moses. So why have the Jews not renounced the Talmud and taken on Moses altogether? Why have two books that say the exact opposite, at all, if you only believe one and not other? If the Talmud tenets are so marginal, why are they still there when they are directly opposed to Moses.
If these Talmud were the tenets of a cult, that cult would have been banned in the US, wouldn’t it? as Satanic because it openly calls for the extermination of all non members of the cult.
