Ryan and Biden: No Difference On Iran

During the vice presidential debate on Thursday, Ryan and Biden argued over sanctions imposed on Iran in response to its unsubstantiated nuclear weapons program.

“When Barack Obama was elected, [Iran] had enough fissile material – nuclear material to make one bomb,” Ryan said. “Now they have enough for five. They’re racing toward a nuclear weapon.”

In fact, according to no less than 16 intelligence agencies, Iran does not have a nuclear weapons program and has not considered working on one since 2003.

“Although Iran continues to enrich uranium at low levels, U.S. officials say they have not seen evidence that has caused them to significantly revise that judgment. Senior U.S. officials say Israel does not dispute the basic intelligence or analysis,” Reuters reported in February.

Under the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, also known as the Non-Proliferation Treaty or NPT, Iran is permitted to develop nuclear material for energy and medical purposes, a fact never mentioned by Republicans and Democrats and rarely brought up by the establishment media.

Israel, on the other hand, is not a signatory of the NPT and refuses to acknowledge its substantial nuclear weapons stockpile and program.

Ryan also attempted to portray the Obama administration as slack on sanctions. “It’s because this administration watered down sanctions, delayed sanctions, tried to stop us for putting the tough sanctions in place,” Ryan said.

“The truth is that the Obama administration has imposed the harshest set of international sanctions Iran has ever faced, and it has begun to have dreadful effects on the Iranian economy, if not any effect on nuclear policy,” writes John Glaser.

“These are the most crippling sanctions in the history of sanctions, period,” Biden retorted.

“When Governor Romney’s asked about it,” Biden responded, “he said, ‘We gotta keep these sanctions.’ When he said, ‘Well, you’re talking about doing more,’ what are you ….you’re going to go to war? Is that what you want to do?”

Both candidates support the establishment agenda on Iran. The figment that Iran is working feverishly on a nuclear weapon and will soon bomb Israel is being used to set the stage for an attack. Sanctions are designed to make the Iranian people suffer and soften up the country prior to a military attack.

It is essentially a repeat of the sanctions regime followed up by a military attack on Iraq a decade ago. In order to make sanction and an ultimate attack palatable to the American people, Iran must be characterized as a rogue nation that supports terrorism and is ruled by madmen who support terrorism around the world.
