South Korea’s military said explosions were heard Wednesday from inside North Korean territory in what appeared to be an artillery drill.
“At least one or two explosion were heard from the North’s mainland. We assume there might be some military drill underway there,” a spokesman for the Joint Chiefs of Staff told AFP.
Tensions are acute along the disputed Yellow Sea border after the North’s deadly bombardment of Yeonpyeong island on November 23.
A previous artillery drill on the North’s mainland sparked a brief panic on the island on November 26.
