  • Sanders Schools Kudlow: ‘You’ve Become A Socialist — Your Version Of Socialism Is To Bail Out The Rich’

    Think Progress
    Friday, Sept 26, 2008

Appearing on CNBC’s Kudlow and Company on Tuesday night, Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) dismantled host Larry Kudlow’s proclaimed support for unfettered free market enterprise.

Sanders told Kudlow that after all the “ranting and raving” he had done “against government intervention and [extolling] the virtues of the free market,” he must surely be against the bailout. “No, I’m in favor of the bailout,” Kudlow said. “You’ve become a socialist overight!” Sanders responded, telling Kudlow, “Your version of socialism is to bail out the rich.”

Kudlow said that he’s in favor of government intervention “every 20 or 30 or 50 years.” Sanders responded:

Larry, if I ask you that the government should intervene like every other industrialized country does and provide health care for all people, you’d say ‘oh no!’ And if I ask you to support government intervention so that we don’t have the highest rate of childhood poverty in the world, you’d say ‘oh no!’ But when Wall Street screws up because of their greed, you say, ‘oh yes, it’s a great idea!’

    (Article continues below)

Proving the Senator’s point, Kudlow ended the segment by stating: “You’re quite right, Mr. Sanders. Do we want a government-run health care system? I say no.” Watch it:

Sanders explained, “My own view is that it would be an obscenity for the middle class of this country – whose standard of living has gone down since Bush has been in office – to bail out Wall Street and the richest people in this country, who have seen a huge increase in their income and wealth.”

Sanders told ThinkProgress earlier this week that the “fiscally responsible way” to pay for the bailout is “through a progressive tax.” Sanders is proposing a “five-year, 10 percent surtax on income over $1 million a year for couples and over $500,000 for single taxpayers,” which he says he would “yield more than $300 billion in revenue.”

    1. Paulson is an idiot Says:

Oh, God. Typical Bernie Sanders Robin Hood economics vs Schachtian fascist economics.

One of them is good-heated but childish and foolish, the other is fascist and serves the elite.
      BOTH of them are incompetent.

Both these guys think “money” solves economic issues. Oh mercy!

The only thing that makes an economy work is INDUSTRY and PRODUCTION. Without those things all the money in the world loses all meaning and is worthless.

Our gambling casino we have called an “economy” for the last 30 years has produced NOTHING but debt and is utterly WORTHLESS. The casino will not “correct” itself, and it is impossible to bail out.

Fuck You Sanders, you’re just as bad, I make a good living, never took out a loan, and don’t owe anything on my credit cards. I’m not paying for the rich, and I’m not paying for the middle class asshole that used his or her homes equity as an ATM machine. Let the ones who are involved suffer and the ones who arent ALONE. Stop stealing my money you shithead. Listen to Ron Paul…..NO MORE INCOME TAX.

    3. Elliott Says:

While Sen. Sanders knows how to make a point, I must point out that the phrase “Socialism for the rich, Free Enterprise for the poor” is lifted directly from an essay (Points Of Rebellion) by U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas. The credit for that phrase goes directly to Justice Douglas.

    4. William Wallace Says:

Sanders is all rigtht in my book, he’s fighting for the working class folks, and the people of Vermont love him. To the above posters who have to resort to cussing at him over this. Keep it classy, sheesh.

    5. minuteman justice Says:

      Bailout?
Trade the witch for the devil?
      No thank you.

    6. tonto Says:

You can blame the politicians for the economic woes of this country .It was the politicians that voted for free trade ,eliminating millions of American jobs. Its the politicians who refuse to enforce immigration laws .Its the politicians who would not enact laws to prevent the wall street blood suckers from stealing anything that not bolted down. You see there is no money in helping the working people but there’s ten of money in helping the rich. The motto in Washington is “MONEY TALKS AND BULLSHIT WALKS”

    7. Mister Jimmy Says:

Why doesn’t that rightwing kook call him “Senator” Sanders? Also, to the dude posting above, claiming he never took out a loan and ‘makes a good living,’ etc. Post again in three or four months pal, after your credit cards don’t work anymore and things look shaky for your job or business to continue and gas slips up above $10 per gallon if and when its available in your area and you need to pass through a military roadblock to get to the mall. It’s comin’ down the pike, bubbah!

    8. Lorenzo Thomas Says:

They want a fascist planet with the superwealthy ruling it all
Since we’re too independent, America must be led to fall
When our credit’s been exhausted to subdue the Middle East,
They’ll install our debtor nation in the body of The Beast
      Traitor…Dare call it treason

    9. John Shaplin Says:

Unfortunately, as Senator Sanders states quite plainly, he supports the bail-out. Now this whole business about a indiscriminate sur-tax on rich people ( which has absolutely no chance of being legislated) is just a gimmick to save his own political capital. It’s of a purely sentimental character- just the sort of thing that appeals to Vermonters- a “kite” that’ll never even get off the ground.

There are proposals before Congress that WOULD help Main St. Representative Raœl Grijalva has proposed a bill, the Saving Family Homes Act, which would allow many facing foreclosure homeowners to stay in their homes. It requires no taxpayer dollars and no new government bureaucracy, and it can begin to protect homeowners as soon as the bill is approved by Congress.

Mr. Sanders could adress the problem of tax loopholes , shelters, deferments, credits which have the effect of reducing returns from the highest corporate tax rates in the world to the lowest.

Even in the case of the Captive Insurance Industry- for which Vermont is the world’s second largest tax haven-second only to the Cayman Islands, when the Treasury and IRS proposed laws to increase the transparency of these operations, Bernie loudly protested saying they were completely unnecssary though it was later shown that the rules would have at least prevented one of their executives from embezzling millions of dollars to build a luxury home.

Of course the Senator opposes the war in Iraq but he agrees with the war in Afghanistan. What’s the difference? His position of the Israeli-Palestinian Issue has never been clearly articulated or fair.

    10. Greenspan is a SOB Says:

Privatize the profits, socialize the costs. It’s the American way!
