Scientists working on the world’s biggest machine are being besieged by phone calls and emails from people who fear the world will end next Wednesday, when the gigantic atom smasher starts up.
The Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, where particles will begin to circulate around its 17 mile circumference tunnel next week, will recreate energies not seen since the universe was very young, when particles smash together at near the speed of light.
Such is the angst that the American Nobel prize winning physicist Frank Wilczek of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has even had death threats, said Prof Brian Cox of Manchester University, adding: “Anyone who thinks the LHC will destroy the world is a t—.”
(Article continues below)
The head of public relations, James Gillies, says he gets tearful phone calls, pleading for the £4.5 billion machine to stop.
“They phone me and say: “I am seriously worried. Please tell me that my children are safe,” said Gillies.
Emails also arrive every day that beg for reassurance that the world will not end, he explained.

What time exactly is it being switched on? Is it a secret?
September 6th, 2008 at 7:54 am
Oh, I found out that the machine has to warm up, so to speak, and that there is now specific time for pushing a huge red button. Great.

Will the Dr. Strangelove deal help me pay the mortgage?
September 6th, 2008 at 8:41 am
I want to stick my head in between the atom smasher. would that kill me?
September 6th, 2008 at 8:49 am
I guess they’ll all be having a party in that deep underground shelter near Denver when that sucker gets powered up!

The Hadron Collider is the culmination of many years worth of research that had been done with smaller collider’s in the past. Yes scientists have been using these machines for decades. This is nothing new.
And anyone that think’s that reality itself is going to unravel needs to brush up on the science itself. The universe has it’s own checks and balance system and anti-matter is created naturally all the time. Nothing is going to end because of it..This is so ridiculous..I implore anyone who’s scared to take a half hour and google hadron collider or particle physics before you freak out..
September 6th, 2008 at 12:12 pm
What else do they expect? Big babies wanna turn on this beast and think no one is gonna be upset? Wahhhh. I only HOPE this think sucks planet earth right up into it. That will shut you all up!
September 6th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
These particle accelerators have been used for a long time…I guess this is just the Super Sized one.
September 6th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
corey m, your comment is scary it is simplicity. i do not agree that google (a major share-owner in swiss based CERN) would have a non-biased list of articles that I would trust. however, its more disconcerning that most people ignore the fact that the LHC will create (intentionally and non) black holes and minute rifts in time/space dimensions. this is admited and always readily nullified with a “relax, stupid” attitude. i believe it was the great philosopher albert einstien who said “hey, whats the worst that could happen?” then he helped invent the A-bomb.

It appears that most people who come here can’t read. They seem to be caught up in all the fear and have lost their marbles.
I know these websites have nothing to do with the bible, but you can still burn your Beatles records if you want
Q: If a black hole existed, would it suck up all the matter in the Universe?

Retards are always looking for something to prospectively end the world. The second something new or different comes out they start having a psychotic episode and scream ‘JUDGEMENT DAY’ or “END OF TEH WORLD!’.
$20 says most of these messages and death threats are originating in the US. If they’re so afraid of the world ending they should just go ‘an hero’.

Worried about this but not at all worried that your government was taken over by facists that represent foreign interests? We are blowing up children everyday FOR YEARS with man made weapons and you worry about this? Oh my Lordy we so need to upgrade our educational system…..
September 6th, 2008 at 2:29 pm
Anyone who’s actually read anything about the LHC, what it does, and basically how it works, would see that this an incredible scientific achievement. I’d be more worried that our Vice President is out and about talking with foreign officials… Who knows what he’s selling them with your tax money this time…
September 6th, 2008 at 6:53 pm
god this is such a non story
@me – where is the evidence that google are major shareholders in cern, and hey so what, do you think the internet is the only source of information? Google also links to this site too – oooh scary.
September 6th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
Matt, I agree totally, I read the whole petition to government concerning the safety issues of the Hadron Collider on their website..Very intriguing…
Me,
Atom sized black holes occur naturally in the universe as well as in colliders.. Yes, my earlier writing was simple, but that’s to get to the point.. Just wait till Wednesday genius.. You’ll see, we’ll all still be here bitching on this website.. And you’ll still be posting hatemail replies to anyone who dares speak what’s on their mind..

im college educated, and by no means stupid. a science major, in fact. these sbientists have no nusiness playing around with this stuff. ever hear of accidents? this is asking for it.
September 7th, 2008 at 1:30 am
@WhiteRabbit: college-educated and still not being able to write two sentences decently; that gives me an idea how much I should value the educational argumentation behind your opinion.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:04 am
It,s 27 miles circumference not 17 and I have also found mis- information on this site, com,on Alex if your going to scare the piss out of the masses please get your “info” correct.
P.S. I will continue to visit your site.

My goodness the ignorance around this subject is profound.
There is ZERO danger of this machine doing anything like what some Chicken Little’s are imagining. The energy is so minute compared with that required to get things happening at anything above a sub-atomic level, that it wouldn’t even register.
Black Holes are actually a theory, amongst an increasingly unwieldy and unsuccessful string of theories being created to try and avoid accepting the traditional model of astrophysics is fatally flawed. There is no evidence of black holes, and many other accepted astrophysical “facts” are nothing more than theories and often theories based on other theories.
The Electric Universe model eliminates many of the accepted theories to replace them with something not only better understood, but also which seems able to make accurate predictions where the traditional models are failing spectacularly.
This machine will hopefully/probably tell us more, even much more about the subatomic scale, it will provide information which may allow us to better understand matter, energy, time many things but beyond the implications via the electric universe theory, it has no real astrophysical components.
I think those people on this board who are claiming scientific qualifications or knowledge, but who are yet still even contemplating the possibility that there is anything to the fear mongering around the LHC; would do themselves a favor by shutting up. You cannot be scientifically informed to any meaningful extent and still entertain any thoughts this machine will threaten life on earth, let alone the universe.
That is not to say they won’t discover things which may lead to weapons which could destroy life on earth at least….but that is another story.
September 7th, 2008 at 3:42 am
@ Rabbit:
It seems you are one of those people who are very experienced in quoting the books you went through couple of pages. We all know that only people who support something even they do not have any expertise of and can not predict the result of it, are by default people who are planted by agencies nobody with a bit of sanity would trust and your job it is to ‘calm’ the sheep. Correct me if I’m wrong.
Just to clarify my point and not to get me wrong, I am very much in favor of science and experimenting under one condition – if this will NOT pose any danger to anyone.
If you re-think your position, I guess you wouldn’t put your hand in fire that of all those nerds running with pocket protectors and glasses in CERN, there are no mad scientists there and they all want to do a favor to us all and discover something that even they are not sure of. Tesla times are long gone and I do not trust anyone who is running such an operation who tells me ‘it’s all gonna be all right’.
September 7th, 2008 at 7:17 am
And I thought the US was idiot central.I feel much better now.
September 7th, 2008 at 8:21 am
Swell. Utter stupidity reigns supreme. Yet still again. The abomination of the craving to engage in murder and suicide manifests yet still again.
The real danger comes from when the LHC collides particles against each other. And if something goes wrong, it probably won’t be known for months or even a few years. And by that time, it’s too late to fix the problem.
And enough with the “nature does this all the time with much more powerful forces” routine. It has absolutely nothing to do with this situation. The LHC is where particles are deliberately being whacked into each other coming from opposite directions with full force, and not like in nature where one particle moving with full energy whacks into another particle which is moving around with much less speed and moving around in random direction. In the LHC, the resultant possible singularity will be hardly moving at all compared to the original speed of the parent particles. In nature, the possible resultant singularity will be moving with a great deal of the original speed of the parent particle that did the whacking.
Totally different situations. And Hawking’s theories are quite old and very out-dated. And CERN is lying about the safety of the LHC. Just like NIST is lying about about how WTC7 collapsed. Scientists are just as capable of lying as non-scientists to further their own agenda. Scientists are just as capable as non-scientists to be corrupt and quite insane. And quite evil.
And yes, Karmakaze, I’m a retard. I’ve been working with singularity physics for over 30 years, and that makes me a retard.
But I’m not so retarded that I exalt death over Life. In comparison to Life, the value of death is always the very lowest of the low. In comparison to Life, the value of death is absolute zero.

I have no idea what this machine does, I feel stupid.
Just think, if this machine does destroy the world then we do not have to worry about the New World Order anymore.

What a joke this machine is!!! All it’s going to prove is that the universe was created by an even bigger Hadron collider, which was built by an even bigger army of scientists and engineers. But don’t ask where those people and resources came from. Because that wouldn’t be “scientific”. In summary. This “experiment” is the result of some completely demented humans who have wasted billions of dollars to build something which can prove nothing. Congratulations dumasses!!
September 7th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
You think I could put my mother-in-law in that fuckin collider?
I got to get rid of this bitch she’s drivin me crazy, throwin pots and pans off my ass. Maybe you scientist could borrow her for a while and just before you’se push the button, throw a piece of cheese in the freek’in machine…she loves cheese, like a fuckin rat. Then slam the fuckin door on that bitch and push the button quick. Don’t worry about the doe… we’ll get you the money , we’re good like that.
