A Turkish protester was killed overnight by unidentified gunman in the southern province of Hatay, marking the second fatality in the weeklong anti- government protests across the country, the governor’s office said Tuesday.

Abdullah Comert, 22, took part in protests in an act of solidarity with protesters in Istanbul, was shot by an unidentified gunman in the provincial capital of Antakya, the governor’s office said in a statement, adding he was seriously wounded and died in the hospital.

A total of 173 people, including 115 police officers, were injured in clashes between protesters and policemen in the nationwide protests in the past week, Turkish authorities said Monday.

The protests started as a sit-in at Gezi Park in Istanbul against plans to redevelop that part of Taksim Square and turned into massive demonstrations against the government.

In Istanbul, some 100,000 people took to the streets over the weekend. Some protesters tried to attack the office of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the city, throwing stones at its windows, while others torched the offices of the ruling Justice and Development Party.
