The Senate Bill 510, or as its curiously referred to, the “Food Safety Modernization Act” is scheduled to see a vote as early as today (Wednesday November the 17th). However the bill is not as harmless as it may seem based on its name alone. If given the green light this bill will effectively and exclusively place the right to grow, trade, transport and share food firmly in the grasp of the Federal Government. In very real terms the passage of this bill amounts to the signing of the Declaration of Dependence.

Imagine a country where the simple act of selling/purchasing fresh and locally grown produce will be a criminal act, simply because the food was not subject to federal oversight. The broad terms of the bill quite clearly cover all food production and its distribution, even between individuals. Under this auspice you may be in violation of the law simply by sharing a 100% homemade holiday fruitcake with your neighbor. Which depending on the quality of the fruitcake, should be against the law anyway, though not punishable by hefty fines or prison time.

If this atrocious bill is passed don’t expect to see SWAT teams waiting outside every organic farm waiting to toss a flash-bang grenade. Modern tyranny most often comes first in the form of a suit knocking at your door and demanding to see your licenses and documentation. And that is precisely what this bill outlines. Exhaustive records must be kept for anyone producing food, which will place growing, production and sale of food outside the reach of the average small time operation. Just think back to the Oregon Lemonade stand that was shut down by Health Inspectors.

The restraints placed on local farms, food co-ops and farmers markets will destroy whats left of independent agriculture. A wise move in the midst of the Great Recession. Without the freedom to strive for self sufficiency, a god given right endowed to all creatures, we are left only one option. Dependence. The forced symbiosis to factory farms, process plants and the GMO mafia, without so much as the freedom to store and save seeds.

If the Federal Government wants to talk about safety perhaps they should first consider the precarious stumbling of the world economy and the ABSOLUTE necessity for the greatest number of people being self sufficient, should a catastrophic economic collapse occur. Is it wise to dismantle our long history of independent agriculture, when our already overwhelmed system is possibly drawing its final breaths? Even the largest, most expansive and well paid bureaucracy won’t be able to keep the food on our plates, let alone theirs if the wheels of industry and commerce come to a sudden halt. Therein lies the greater potential for loss of life than e.coli enriched eggs and tainted tomatoes.

Americans will be entirely at the whim of their “superiors” to authorize resources that are as fundamental to life as air. Our lives and our well being will be beholden to a corporate bureaucracy known as the FDA, and under ultimate authority of the Department of Homeland Security. The drafters of the bill claim that the intentions of its mandate have not been written to benefit Mega-Corporations or Lobbies. But the revolving door between Monsanto and the FDA has been in the news for years. More of this bill’s history and consequences can be found here.

Can we hope that our representatives have looked further than the rosy name of the bill to examine the extent of its contents? If the past is any indication we cannot assume they will. Today I urge you to Email, Fax or Call your Senators and politely yet firmly demand they not allow this deplorable declaration to pass.

Then, should it succeed we ALL must orderly disobey these slights to our personal freedom, and as a matter of principal take up, teach and encourage the ancient practice of community agriculture in whatever capacity available. Be it with a 1/2 acer plot or purchasing your first Topsy Turvy. We cannot be overcome by unjust laws if we overwhelm the enforcers by making popular the action of breaking those very laws.
