The mystery surrounding the sudden illness of Britain’s top spy deepened last night after a neighbour revealed he was found covered in blood by an artist who worked in his house.
Alex Allan, the 57-year-old chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee, was still in a coma under police guard as doctors ran tests to try to identify what caused him to collapse.
He was found by wildlife painter Dominique Salm, who took over the studio in his home when his artist wife of 29 years, Katie Clemson, died of cancer last year.
Neighbours said yesterday that Miss Salm, 35, may have saved his life. She told them she encountered a horrifying scene, with Mr Allan slumped unconscious and ‘blood everywhere’.
Whitehall sources insisted yesterday there was no evidence of foul play – and blamed his collapse on pneumonia. But this does not chime with Miss Salm’s account of what she found.
(Article continues below)
Experts say pneumonia sufferers may cough up some blood but rarely large amounts.
Miss Salm’s account of the events is likely to fuel speculation over whether Mr Allan was a target for foreign agents.
Meanwhile her mother, Sally Ann Salm, added to the intrigue by declaring: ‘Some very serious people have asked Dominique not to comment on any of this until it has been fully investigated and she is doing just that. So am I.’
One of Miss Salm’s neighbours said: ‘Apparently there was blood everywhere. Dominique has a set of keys for Alex’s home because she works there during the week.

This story is ridiculous. Alex Allen is NOT a spy. This whole story was blown up out of proportion by The Sun and the Times newspapers (both Rupert Murdoch’s rags). Then all the other tabloids followed suite. Alex Allen the UK’s super spy (so super everyone knows who he is)poisoned by AL QUIEDA, or maybe the RUSSIANS. Don’t forget to be scared of the boogy man, now he’s taken our super spy away.
Pathetic. The only real shocker about all this is that they didn’t try to blame Iran.
It must have been a whole 3 days since Murdoch had an Al Quieda story for us, and the sudden illness of a WELL KNOWN senior civil servent who was on the Joint Intelligence Committee musta been music to his ears.
Now sit back and enjoy another dose of terror propaganda that will keep you sending your sons to carry out murder and make Haliburton happy.

He’s not a Spy or 007 type person, if you read the whole link you’ll realize this. He was “chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee” who basically met with MI5, MI6 and GCHQ.
Propaganda isn’t just from our government, Prison Planet links to spin the story’s in their favor also, as much as I like the site, it’s does have its bias side, as do main stream media.
“He was private secretary to both John Major and Tony Blair and was previously permanent secretary at the Ministry of Justice and High Commissioner for Australia.
He was appointed to be chairman of the Joint Intelligence Committee (JIC) by Gordon Brown [PM] a year ago and took up his job in the autumn.
It is Mr Allan’s job to assess the intelligence put forward by MI5(domestic), MI6 (forign), GCHQ, military intelligence and foreign intelligence sources.
He reports to the permanent secretary for intelligence, security and resilience who in turn reports to the Prime Minister.
Government sources suggest Mr Allan was “too high profile” to be a target for foreign intelligence agencies but others have suggested this is exactly what could make him vulnerable.”
He has access to very highly sensitive information that would be very useful to foreign intelligence and organized crime etc.
For the American’s reading this, it’s like a government official who meets with the CIA and FBI boss as well as reviews information from your Echelon project. Basically someone in the “know” and classified to see secret documents! This is no silly field agent otherwise he wouldn’t be known of course!
They call all MI5 agents spooks, yet they only deal with intelligence, as do the CIA.
