The St. Cloud Police Department unveiled the newest member of its vehicle fleet Monday, a military surplus armored personnel carrier that will be used by its SWAT team.
The vehicle is commonly called an MRAP, which stands for mine-resistant, ambush-protected. The city paid about $3,000 to ship the vehicle to St. Cloud from Kansas. The only other cost to the city was to paint it and put department logos on it.
The vehicle, which is worth more than $400,000, has about 3,600 miles on it and will replace an old ambulance that had been used by the SWAT team for its high-risk activities.
