Suspicious package found near Civic Center

A suspicious package found early this morning near Civic Center was “rendered safe” by authorities.

Denver police officers, firefighters and the Denver Bomb Squad was called to Civic Center Plaza, 1560 Broadway, after the item was found at about 3 a.m., said a spokesman with the city’s Joint Information Center.

The JIC is open during the Democratic National Convention to respond to media calls about public safety and security.

The package was found in a plaza area above the RTD Broadway bus terminal just north of Colfax Avenue between Broadway and Lincoln Street.

A loud pop was heard in the area at about 3:45 a.m.

The JIC spokesman would not confirm that the package was detonated and would only describe it as being “rendered safe.”

Traffic on Broadway, Lincoln and Colfax in the area was temporarily halted by the incident.
