Tepco to seek restart of Japan nuclear plant

Tokyo Electric Power could restart one of its idled nuclear plants for the first time since the Fukushima disaster in 2011, after a previously hostile local government said it would allow the utility to seek safety certification for a massive facility on the Sea of Japan.

Objections from Haruhiko Izumida, governor of Niigata prefecture, had been seen as a central obstacle to plans by Tepco to resume operations at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa facility, the world’s largest nuclear power station by generating capacity.

Tepco, whose struggle to contain radiation-contaminated water at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi plant has given rise to fresh global concerns in recent months, is seeking initially to restart two of seven reactors at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa.

It lodged its application with the Nuclear Regulation Authority on Friday.
