An Islamic organization has confirmed that terror suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has studied at its institute in Houston, but has condemned his actions aboard a plane on Christmas Day.
Abdulmutallab, who allegedly tried to blow up Flight 253 inbound to Detroit, studied at AlMaghrib Institute in 2008 during an annual summer program with 150 other students, according to the Houston Chronicle.
The institute’s vice president says Abdulmutalllab was living in London when he came over to the States for the program. “From what we witnessed, he showed no signs of extremism,” Shaykh Waleed Basyouni tells the Chronicle.
“Our institute’s stance against extremism, violence and other related subjects has always been clear,” he said. “We unequivocally condemn it in all its forms.”
