Webster Tarpley is a brilliant man and again he put forth some excellent analysis and brought forth some intriguing arguments as to what is going on in the world today along with Alex. Interesting listening.
As for Webster’s assertion that the Grecians wanted a war with Troy 1000 years B.C. because of some sort of belief in reducing over-population; this cannot be substantiated. I don’t doubt that the priestess at the Oracle of Delphi in Greece who was sniffing the gases coming out of the earth there and getting high could have said such a thing. Quite Possibly she said such a thing. She was high.
About Five Hundred Years later a different Oracle Priestess told the Greeks of that era not to fight the Persians or they would lose. Themestocles, the Allied Commander of the Greek City States told the Athenians and their allies to ignore this nonsense, evacuated the women, children and elderly to the Island of Salamis and presided over one of the biggest military upsets in history with the defeat of the Persians in the narrow straits of Salamis.
Just because some pagan Greek cult priestess from antiquity made a statement does not mean the rest of the Greeks believed this eugenics nonsense. Furthermore, the pre-eminent record of the Trojan War comes to us from Homer’s Illiad. There is a lot of blood and gore in that writing. And it portrays bad behavior on both the Greek and Trojan sides. Yet, Homer makes a critical but fair introspection of his Greek Brethren, much like Alex attempts on his program about the state of America today. Additionally, Homer shows his listeners and readers that the Trojans, even though they were the enemies of the Greeks, shared a common humanity with them. And he makes the distinct case that war, far from being glorious is an awful state of affairs.
We may take such ideas today for granted but in the ancient world, they were revolutionary! Enemies in other cultures were not seen as fellow humans but creatures that needed to be destroyed. And one did not criticize their own governmental or military leadership back during antiquity in most other cultures. But the Greeks allowed and even welcomed critical introspection throughout their history as is evidenced in their plays, epic poetry and admonishments from orators.
The Trojan War, though awful and brutal with both sides displaying bad behavior was NOT a war about eugenics as Webster Tarpley implied. It wasn’t a war over Helen of Troy either as beautiful as she may have been and as Homer may lead us to believe. It was most likely a trade war that had to do with cloths and the Greeks won.
The ancient Greeks played to win when they went to war but they were not eugenicists. Nor was this a part of mainstream Greek thought. The Spartans practiced a form of it on their own but they contribute little to Greek thought. For those who understand Greek. FEE-LEE where we get philo is the plural Greek word for friends. It is the SAME word with a different intonation and spelling for nationality. The Greek language is in essence saying that the nationalities, at least to the Greeks should be their friends.
People like Paul Carthage and others are attempting revisionist history on Greek thought to often portray the ancient Greeks in a bad light. To say the Greeks were flawed human beings like the rest of us is correct. They said of themselves, “We know the good but cannot do it.” Much like St. Paul said in his Epistle to the Romans centuries later. But the Greeks also had a humanity to them, a love for freedom, a quest for beauty, an admiration for courage and a critical self introspection that would serve us all well to remember and follow in our present day and society. It is for THESE reasons they have rightfully earned the respect and admiration of many thinkers in the centuries that have followed them.
And it is these same people who also inspired the founding fathers to take their uniquely Greek ideas of liberty of freedom, expand on them and create a republic called the United States of America.
