(I'm very saddened that some people have lost their homes and wish them a recovery.) However, the idea that the subprime and the housing market was the principle culprit for the current economic problems simply does not register as correct to me. According to U.S. Government statistics MOST of the mortgages in the United States during most of 2008; 90% - 93% were solvent. There is just NO WAY that a 7-10% mortgage failure rate should/would result in economic problems of this caliber across the globe. The derivatives market also contributed and this article aptly and correctly points out the problem of selling debt as a security and so forth. I could be mistaken, but something else seems to be at work here. The only way to find out for sure is to independently audit the books of all the big players in this crisis thereby getting a better and more complete answer of what really happened.
