Environment: The solar wind is slowing, but Al Gore is still spewing hot air. The Oscar winner is promoting civil disobedience to stop energy and economic growth as the first U.S. emissions cap-and-trade program begins.

Speaking before Bill Clinton’s Global Initiative, junk science advocate Gore called on young people to take the law into their own hands because the climate, he claims, is a-changin’. He told the gathering in New York City that “the world has lost ground to the climate crisis” and the time for action is now.

“If you’re a young person looking at the future of this planet and looking at what is being done right now, and not done, I believe we have reached the stage where it is time for civil disobedience to prevent the construction of new coal plants that do not have carbon capture and sequestration,” Gore said to loud applause.

    (Article continues below)

His comments come two weeks after a British jury acquitted six Greenpeace activists accused of causing property damage at a power plant. The jury felt the “protest” was acceptable because the “protesters” feared the plant would contribute to global warming.

    Luddites of the world, unite!

On the same day Gore spoke, scientists involved in NASA’s Ulysses project reported that the intensity of the sun’s solar wind was at its lowest point since the beginning of the space age — one more indication that the sun, the biggest source of energy affecting the Earth, is getting quiet.

The weaker solar wind appears to be due to changes in the sun’s magnetic field, but the cause is unknown. Sunspots, which normally fluctuate in 11-year cycles, are at a virtual standstill. In August, the sun created no visible spots. The last time that happened: June 1913.

The results of the Ulysses spacecraft’s mission, according to Jet Propulsion Laboratory project scientist Ed Smith, show that “we are in a period of minimal activity that has stretched on longer than anyone anticipated.”

The consequences for Earth are enormous. The lack of increased activity could signal the start of what is known as a Maunder Minimum, an event that occurs every couple of centuries and can last as long as a century. It leads to extended periods of severe cooling such as what happened during the Little Ice Age.

It may already be happening. The four major agencies tracking Earth’s temperature, including NASA’s Goddard Institute, report that the Earth cooled 0.7 degree Celsius in 2007, the fastest decline in the age of instrumentation, putting us back to where the Earth was in 1930.

The climate is changing, but not in the direction Al Gore thinks. As the Earth demonstrably cools under a weakening sun, a 10-state coalition on Thursday held the nation’s first carbon allowance auction to deal with a warming trend that may have ended a decade ago.

They will impose a minor league version of the Lieberman-Warner economy-killing cap-and-trade rationing system in which emissions are limited by a progressively lowered cap. Emission permits are auctioned off by government, making it a cap-and-tax system. Permits can be traded or sold between companies like baseball cards.

The Lieberman-Warner bill would mandate emission cuts of 44% below 2007 levels. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that it would cost as much as $3 trillion a year in lost GDP in an economy of roughly $14 trillion. It dwarfs the current financial crisis. But then, it’s for a good cause — right, Al?

The New York-based Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, launched Thursday, strives to freeze CO2 emissions through 2014 and then gradually reduce them to 10% below current levels by 2018. The states participating are Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Like its bigger cousin, it’s a job- and growth-killing plan in a time of economic crisis. As the sun slows and the Earth cools, it’ll mean higher energy prices during colder and snowier winters.

Al Gore’s hippie legions may have to wear their winter coats.

    1. Paulson is an idiot Says:

Gore is a hypocrite and a works for the fascist pigs.

If you don’t believe there is a God, just look at what God has done to Al Gore.

Directly in his face, in an ironical twist of fate. His global warming is quickly becoming the laughing stock of the serious scientific community.

My God, the satellite data says it is getting COLDER. What MORE do you want?

Iceberg’s melting? For giggles, lets say, “alright, they’re melting, fine” but since the earth is getting cooler, what the HELL is causing this melting?

Probably they’ll say, “Global warming has caused cooling temperatures which is causing the atmosphere to become more dry and breaking the icebergs up and making them disappear”.
I just made that up, which means its probably something they will say at some point.

      We need DEVELOPMENT.

      MASSIVE development; and FAST.

    2. Brad Says:

When ice melts in a tub or a bowl of water, the water cools. So does the bowl or tub in fact.
Could this simple rule apply to the planet?

    3. Brad Says:

Iner core heat, Sun heat, heat waves in the Galaxy, sun spots, clouds bocking the sun, melting ice, melted ice.

I have lost total confidence in the whole debate. It is clear that no one knows exactly what is happening. Especialy since there are combinations effecting the change.. So you would need to show the link or no link between the compilation of results.

The funny thing is.. All humans still admit to this day – We dont know how the univers/life works.
If you dont know that then you dont know about climate change.

This seems to be a very short experiment to me.
How about people being clean for the simple good experience of it? would that be too logical?
All I see are admitions that we have been sold dirty cars, homes and everything else.
You give me the tools at an afordable price and ILL be clean. Pffft.

    4. Richard Says:

Notice how Gore is going after young people, who tend to be naive. It was the youth brigades who were used by the communists in China to go after the older generations who had supposedly ruined the country with their old-fashioned ideas and wastefulness. Sound familiar?
Message to the young: Ignore Gore, he is a buffoon.

    5. Richard Says:

Notice how Gore is trying to incite the youth in to embracing his mad ideas?
It was the youth brigades who swept through communist China blaming the older generations for ruining the country with their wastefulness and old fashioned ideas.
Tyrannical government love to indoctrinate the young.

    6. Lorenzo Thomas Says:

They want a fascist planet with the superwealthy ruling it all
Since we’re too independent, America must be led to fall
When our credit’s been exhausted to subdue the Middle East,
They’ll install our debtor nation in the body of The Beast
      Traitor…Dare call it treason

    7. Diane Says:

Global warming leads to global cooling. If you melt too much of the Arctic ice, it will disrupt the Gulf Stream engine that keeps northern latitudes warm enough for life. Also, if you melt too much of those northern places, it releases methane gas, warming things even faster. When the methane runs out, you then crash into an ice age. Those flash frozen mammoths in glaciers show it happened fast last time. Cold or warm, food will be a problem. It doesn’t matter if the cause is solar, volcanic or man made. Man made is the only factor we can mitigate physically. Why do you think they are doing a seed bank in Svaalbard? Reality bites.

To try to use the weakening solar wind to debunk Gore is silly. That one is potentially a much bigger problem. The Antarctic has a huge ozone hole that suddenly appeared. That is a hole in the shield that protects us from harmful radiation. The weakening solar wind also tampers with earth’s protective shield. If the problem with our shield from harmful radiation expands, food crops are going to start crashing. We need to focus on these very real problems rather than the irrelevancy of the question if greed will win out in a “free” market.

    8. Rich Says:

Wow – “Paulson is an Idiot” is an idiot (ironic twist of fate there), well said though Dianne and Brad. More common sense needs to enter these anti-Gore diatribes. I find it strange that pages so astute in watching Bush’s contribution to the States are suddenly happy to vindicate his destructive bent for the planet. Far more coherent conspiracies than many discussed (with which I am often in full accord) can be directed to corporate entities such as Exxonmobil and the greed of Industrial cartels in perpetuating this nonsense that Mankind plays no role in destroying his own environment. The whole blindness of those who condemn the Neocon ideology, yet miss this obvious factor, is an ongoing anaethema to me.

    9. LOL Says:

This makes me laugh so hard because they got you in a climate debate when peak oil will affect you much quicker. Without energy economies stop growing. Period. You should be worried about how much your standard of living is going to drop in the coming years than rising sea levels that happen over millions of years.

    10. Rich Says:

LOL – You’re right about peak oil. I agree, got sidetracked from that very real truth. Kudos for bringing me back on track, but I don’t believe it’s millions of years until we feel the real impact of climate either.

    11. anonymous Says:

Diane and Rich if you are really scientists or just have been duped by the fascist climate scientists at the IPCC here is a site you should read that gives you some sane science http://climatesci.org
