The Debate Is Over: Waterboarding Is Torture

The U.S. government continually claims that it does not torture people, yet it admits to using “waterboarding” as a method of interrogation. If there was ever a debate about whether or not waterboarding was a form of torture then it has now been definitively answered.
Neo-Con author and journalist Christopher Hitchens, a former Trotskyite turned staunch Iraq war proponent, underwent the lightest form of waterboarding possible and at the end of it still concluded, “Believe Me, It’s Torture”.
Writing in Vanity Fair, Hitchens described the experience.
In this pregnant darkness, head downward, I waited for a while until I abruptly felt a slow cascade of water going up my nose. Determined to resist if only for the honor of my navy ancestors who had so often been in peril on the sea, I held my breath for a while and then had to exhale and—as you might expect—inhale in turn. The inhalation brought the damp cloths tight against my nostrils, as if a huge, wet paw had been suddenly and annihilatingly clamped over my face. Unable to determine whether I was breathing in or out, and flooded more with sheer panic than with mere water, I triggered the pre-arranged signal and felt the unbelievable relief of being pulled upright and having the soaking and stifling layers pulled off me. I find I don’t want to tell you how little time I lasted.

Now watch the video and compare it to a real waterboarding situation likely to be experienced by one of the goat herders, taxi drivers or teenage kids rounded up and incarcerated at Gitmo or Abu Ghraib.
The most terrifying aspect of waterboarding, according to accepted definitions, is that the victim experiences the strong sensation that he is drowning and near death.
In contrast, Hitchens is constantly reassured that he can stop the exercise at any point not only by dropping steel implements but also by uttering the code word. Detainees at Abu Ghraib would not enjoy the same privilege, and would be undergoing the experience in the knowledge that fellow inmates had already been tortured to death.
In addition, water is gently trickled onto Hitchens’ head in contrast to how it would gush down upon a “terror suspect” while they were screamed at and also brutally restrained by interrogators.
After a matter of seconds, Hitchens drops the steel implements and the mock interrogators help him to recover.
The wider point here is that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged “mastermind” of 9/11, underwent the same process in entirely different circumstances. This is why he admitted to being responsible for all manner of things, only stopping short of claiming culpability for killing Kennedy, creating AIDS and being the real Santa Claus.
As Hitchens notes, “Even the C.I.A. sources for the Washington Post story on waterboarding conceded that the information they got out of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was “not all of it reliable,” underscoring the point that torture has no benefit other than further disgracing America’s name, conditioning the public to accept a government that tortures, and putting American POW’s in more danger in the future.

Reality TV concept: celebrity waterboarding wherein each contestant is asked the musical question: “Is waterboarding torture?” First contestants: Dick and Georgie in tandem, of course, and from there we work our way through the rest of the Administration, our supine Congress and the politico-media complex…Just imagine the ratings a show with brownshirt blowhard Bill O’Reilly would garner and Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh…The possibilities boggle the mind. A surefire hit and ratings sweep.

Of course Water Boarding is Torture. Unfortunately the American Sheeple see this behavior on TV and thinks it’s okay. Well, it is not okay. This action stands everything against what the founding fathers stood for. The behavior does show that those who are in charge have totally souled out to the dark side.

It took very little water before the subject stopped it. As a veteran I am sorry to everyone and anyone that was tortue at the hands of the US military. I was active-duty during the 90’s and we told over and over against not to tortue anyone for any reason. I blame the Leader for this, we once stood on the rock of freedom, with the leadersip of the Leader, we are under the rock of suppression.

Notice how nice and pleasant the interrogators are do you really think they are that nice to the victims they brutally torture. Do you really think they use fresh clean water. I hear they use human waste a urine and feces mixture. this combined with the beating, electric shock, Sexual mutilation and humiliation. Bush has opened the door for this method to be used I say we use it on them to find the truth about 9-11. The “in-terror-gators” might use the “Im your friend”(good cop-bad cop) approach on a POW if they choose to play it
that way, “we have to do this too you, it is our

The technique is effective torture whether you are nice about it
or not. The guy could have had a massive heart attack from the looks of him, did they have medical people ready with defibulators, or was this done next to a E.R.? It just looks reckless to me and not a well done demonstration, look how much water they had, he didnt even take 1/2gallon, they had 3 gallons it looks like. Do they use distilled water and sterilized towels to guard against pneumonia infections, thats what kills alot of “saved” drowning victims the lung infections after. Did they give him a bunch of coffee beforehand? I hear that is a technique to stimulate pain receptors, use a bunch of caffeine (or rather don’t before going to the dentist, it takes more shots to numb you up)

as an america, talking to desso, i feel just like you do. i feel ashamed of some of the ignorant people all around, most of us are completely blind to the world, i myself consider that i am a citizen of the world, not of a country. As a long time fan of Christopher Hitchens, this further validates the clear fact that this man always puts his money where his mouth is.
He was for the Iraq War, mainly as a means to the end to end the terrible sanctions regime that destroyed that country. Tyranny should not be tolerated in Iraq, North Korea, America, Mexico or anywhere else. And despots should get whats coming to them.
Way to go Christopher, but I’m sure if they did this to Alex, there wouldn’t be a safety signal.

Everything that happens in America happens after it already is in place in European countries. The amount of freedom in America and say, England, or France, isn’t even a comparison. The Orwellian police state already in effect in those countries is what is planned for and coming to fruition in America. This is to all who are asking where the honor of America went. I think honor probably fared worse than the detainies. It was quietly dragged into the night, taken before one of the many secret courts and deemed ‘Too dangerous to risk imprisoning’. Whereupon it was dragged away and quietly killed. The only problem is that the Bush regime didn’t count on the American people to start waking up, it may be too late, but with the other coutries standing up to the American government, it might have a chance to be overthrown and be re-established into what it was. A place where ‘all men are created equal’ and have the ‘unalienable rights’ of ‘life, liberty and the persuit of happiness.’

Ok I am totally against torture when it is implied upon US citizens, and non-military foriegn personel. I don’t think that just because you are suspect of some sort of knowledge you should be tortured because if that is our standard then we will make it a practice to torture anyone who the interrogator sees fit. I guarantee that the interrogators will get used to it and start torturing everyone, people always take everything too far, it’s in our nature.
What if one day they knocked on your door and they thought you had information that you actually didn’t have and then they proceeded to torture you to get it out of you. How would your views on torture be then? Especially when they didn’t stop because they just know your hiding some sort of secret from them.

Calling us names won’t help anything. Deriding us for “inaction” won’t help either. Believing our broken election system will be a quick fix by voting for truly Godly politicians is but a pipe dream in Alice in Wonderland!
How about putting your pent-up energies into helping make the voice of reason and logic louder than ever. You can attract more flies with honey than vinegar. There are activists hard at work in this country who are trying to wake the masses from their TV-propaganda-induced slumber. However, human nature being what it is and how it is, is one of habit and old habits die hard! If you care enough about a people to provoke their thinking, TOSS THE NAME-CALLING AND DERISION, and start educating!!! Otherwise, all you accomplish is pushing the people away from learning the truth. I try my best to empower, enlighten, and uplift people as partners in the solution. This is hard enough to accomplish at the individual level when some of you loud mouths berate and diminish the average citizen. I’m not a defender of Bush by any stretch of the imagination. I wouldn’t be against any ‘actions’ taken against him should it be reasonable proved how much of a hand he had in the whole affair. As far as being responsible for our president’s actions because we voted him in twice? Poppycock. I didn’t vote for him or Al Gore. Not voting for Mccain or Obama either. And yes, I have every right to complain. Both are both crooked as the day is long. Why should I support either? Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.As far as if it was my old child being waterboarded..well that is a slippery slope. For one, for my child to be in that situation,here in the US..then most likely, he would have made some choices in life that led him/her down to be in that position. Not unlike that guy who is over with Bin Ladin now that was from California…I’m sure his family loves him but no doubt have disowned him. Just to make something clear. You have one day, maximim, to remove your government peacefully. You have a MINIMUM of 1459 ((365 x 4) – 1) days to remove them with similar means OR otherwise. Just because you exercised your right to vote on that one day does not invalidate, nor make redundant, your right to remove them at any other time. Nor does it alleviate your DUTY to do so when they are not acting in the interest of the populus. It’s in your Constitution as well as in the writings of your founding fathers. I suggest you read them.
As for using “friendly word(s)” and attracting more flies with honey, well, those methods are useless with the American people. You (Scorpion081) yourself said it was hard enough to wake people up. That’s the point. If it is this hard to wake up the American people in the face of such an abundance of cold hard facts, then the time for reason and logic, are over. By your reasoning, which country isn’t terroristic? Those that bend over and take it up the bum? I’d go a step further and agree that there are many American’s who are also sick of this. But what can one person or even a group of people do? The “bad guys” are already in place and pretty much hold all the cards. It wouldn’t surprise me if in the not so distant future, Americans will start rebelling and you will see lots of deaths. What will be left will be sheep.

I’m not a child posting on this site to piss Americans off. I’m a concerned citizen of a country that may be next in line for US agression. Is there any counrty who’s leaders are perfect? Of course not. But the are degrees of tyranny which, at some point, the people MUST rise. The US has already crossed that line some time ago.
When you say take it up the bum? Who exactly are you referring to that’s giving it to you? Another country or your own government? Do you remember what the rational was for ‘terrorists’ wanting to kill you? Because they “loved your freedom” Question: do you have more freedom since 911 or less. The answer is undoubtably less. Hence the terrorists are winning. Who’s taking away your freedom? Your own government. Hence, your government are the terrorists. They perpetrated 911 and now they are the one’s giving it to you up the ass.
By the way, do you know who Guantanamo is for?? You think it’s for Al Qaida? It’s for you – Americans. Haven’t you ever heard of Machiavelli’s sheep? Machiavelli said the easiet way to get a bunch of sheep to herd (go where you want them to go) is to slaughter one of them in plain site of the others. The others will be so scared that they will herd willingly. With the War Commsissions act passed in ‘07 Bush can deem ANYONE (even a US citizen) an enemy combatant. Do I need to spell it out any further??
With all due respect to Americans, if they are not willing to sacrifice there well being in the face of such a heinous government then they really aren’t worth being called humans in the first place. It’s just animals governing animals.

Which country is terroristic? 90% of socialist countries are terrorist. And against their own people. As far as taking up the bum…see Spain and it’s recent bowing of the head to the terrorist. The Spanish government didn’t win, the terrorist did. I never heard the official rationale while terrorist wanted Americans dead but I’m pretty sure its not because of our freedom. Something about America being infidels for not being a Muslim-state. But that’s only on the surface…I concede that today we have less freedoms than before 9/11 and are NOT any safer for it today. However, the fact that the US was able to handpick some terrorist(in theory)to strike fear in its own people doesn’t resolve the fact that their is a whole region of people who want to go visit Allah and take 5+ people with them when they do so.Your right in the government being the terrorist but again that’s only half the story…you have smart terrorist and the other terrorist that are feeding out of their hand.And yes, US government is trying it’s best to rake everyone over the coals.I don’t think Guantanamo is strictly for terrorist nor for American’s. There are plenty of secret prisons in the US to keep citizens.

Bruno, you are obviously under the impression that there are muslim terrorists that are out to get the US. As long as you continue to believe that you will neither be safe nor free.
You sound a little young if you cannot recall President Bush himself saying ‘the terrorists’ attacked the US because they love your freedom.
I suggest you investigate the truth about 911 – the root of all of the loss of your freedoms. It was your own government that perpetrated it along with all the propoganda against muslims. Should you continue to fail to realize that and understand the ramifications of such, you will never understand your government’s intentions, which are not to protect you.
Do you honestly think there is a religion out there that say’s go out and kill to reach heaven?? I suggest you read the Koran and then go visit Iraq or Iran to see if they don’t love their children as much as we do.

I don’t teach my 10 year old to hate anyone. I don’t teach him that he is rewarded for killing someone else in the name of Allah.

They use torture because they dont catch any of the real terrorists. The terrorist are either killed or have killed themselves. The torture is used to get convictions for past crimes through false admissions.
