It has not been a good week for the Republic. It took quite a bit of trampling of the Constitution, but the bailout bill passed, as I suspected it would.
The bailout failed the first time it was brought to the House. Undaunted, the Senate pressed on by attaching the bailout as an amendment to another House-passed bill that was pending in the Senate. The new bailout version had new taxes, so according to the Constitution it should not have originated in the Senate.
The rallying cry heard all over the Hill the past two weeks was that Congress must act. Our economy is facing a meltdown. Would this bill fix it? Nobody could really explain how it would. In fact, few demonstrated any real understanding of credit markets, of derivatives, of credit default swaps or mortgage-backed securities. If they did, they would have known better than to vote for this bill. All they knew was that this administration was saying some frightening things, and asking for a lot of money. And when has Congress ever been able to come up with a better solution to a problem than to throw more of your money at it? So that is what Congress did, enacting a financial PATRIOT Act in the process.

In its embarrassment at being called a “Do-Nothing Congress” the 110th Congress took decisive action and did SOMETHING. No matter that it was the wrong thing. In fact, it wasn’t until the Senate had a chance to load it up with even MORE spending, when it was finally inflationary and horrible enough, at $850 billion instead of a mere $700 billion, that it passed – and with a comfortable margin, in spite of constituent calls still coming in overwhelmingly against it. 57 members switched their vote!
The market went down anyway. Our nation is now just that much more in the hole. You will pay your part of this mess through inflation, and very likely hyperinflation.
Sometimes doing nothing is much better than thrashing about aimlessly – when one is caught in quicksand, for example, or when one doesn’t understand economics and finds oneself in the position Congress was in for the past two weeks, with decades of irresponsible monetary policy coming to a head. Why should we trust the same people who said just a few months ago that the economy was perfectly sound? The same people who just knew there were weapons of mass destruction? The same people that crammed the PATRIOT Act down our throats? Why not consult the people who had the foresight and understanding to see this coming? They would have recommended such logical actions as repealing the Community Reinvestment Act, which forces banks to make bad loans, or allowing the market to set interest rates instead of the Federal Reserve system. How about abolishing the Federal Reserve altogether? There are many things that could have been done, but don’t expect Congress take a course of action that comes from a place of understanding and competence when they could just spend money.
This bailout will be the legacy of the 110th “Do-Something” Congress, along with record-low approval ratings. Here’s hoping the 111th Congress will be a “Do the Right Thing” Congress, and will focus on repealing and abolishing what is wrong with government instead of reinforcing it.

Yep I knew this would happen, I even said so on one of the reports celebrating the first downfall. The media went into beserk mode to whip the masses into an emotional frenzy before directing them towards congress.
I seriously doubt the bill will stop the financial crises but the bill probably had many things inside it that the elites really wanted but shadowed it under the guise of protecting the financial system.
When the economy goes bang, which I’m sure it will, the media will say it was the fault of the government/congress not acting quick enough not because of the fed or any other central bank or even fractional reserve. Just wait and see, only time will tell…

Ron Paul’s take is 100 percent accurate. The Do Something, Do Nothing Congress is an embarrassment to all Americans who have paid taxes, lived productive law abiding lives and are almost ready (for some of us) to emerge into the larger world. They have let down college students, American soldiers, the middle class and all of those expecting something more than a bogus bill from a sad group of confused self seeking assholes. Why bother to give them one red cent an further? They cannot wage wars legally, provide for the common defense, abide by the Constitution. Instead they are an incestuous melange who thinks life begins and ends within the Beltway. THROW THEM ALL OUT! The last straw was granting false flag terrorism to be granted to BANKERS. PROTEST NOW.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Americans’ retirement plans have lost as much as $2 trillion in the past 15 months, Congress’ top budget analyst estimated Tuesday.
The upheaval that has engulfed the financial industry and sent the stock market plummeting is devastating workers’ savings, forcing people to hold off on major purchases and consider delaying their retirement, said Peter Orszag, the head of the Congressional Budget Office.
As Congress investigates the causes and effects of the financial meltdown, the House Education and Labor Committee was hearing from retirement savings and budget analysts on how the housing, credit and other financial troubles have battered pensions and other retirement funds, which are among the most common forms of savings in the United States.
“Unlike Wall Street executives, America’s families don’t have a golden parachute to fall back on,” said Rep. George Miller, D-Calif., the panel chairman. “It’s clear that their retirement security may be one of the greatest casualties of this financial crisis.”
More than half the people surveyed in an Associated Press-GfK poll taken Sept. 27-30 said they worry they will have to work longer because the value of their retirement savings has declined.
Orszag indicated the fear is well-founded. Public and private pension funds and employees’ private retirement savings accounts—like 401(k)’s—have lost some 20 percent overall since mid-2007, he estimated. Private retirement plans may have suffered slightly more because those holdings are more heavily skewed toward stocks, Orszag added.

Nice article, Distinguished Gentleman Ron Paul.
Meanwhile, while I most certainly like your politics better than virtually anyone elses in Congress, you had a chance to REALLY DO something during your campaign when you were in the spotlight.
What you did was propose some half assed measure about “making Social Security voluntary for younger people”. In fact, it is already voluntary, FOR EVERYBODY, at least as far as the WRITTEN LAW is concerned. You could have simply, in a nationally televised debate, admitted that 1) Social Security is voluntary, 2) use of a Social Security number where none is required by law, i.e., on the job, bank accounts, brokerage accounts, etc. is what incurs liability for the income tax for the 99% of Americans that do not have foreign sourced income and/or engage in the small handful of activities that are legitimately the subject of the income tax and 3) if elected you would break the collusion between the private, corporate sector and govt. to illegally enforce “voluntary compliance” by making it impossible to do anything without that infernal slave number and 4) push for legislation requiring 100% PLAIN LANGUAGE FULL DISCLOSURE AS to all terms, conditions, rights waived and liabilities incurred, including tax liabilities, anytime that number is asked for.
The income tax props up the system of fiat currency that is destroying this country. Social Security is the nexus or connection that makes people liable for the income tax. Social Security is 100% VOLUNTARY, at least as far as WRITTEN LAW is concerned, but is thought to be required by law by most Americans, who have no idea that it is only corporate policy that requires that number. Destroy that connection and the deliberate mal-application of the income tax fails, and with it goes the cancer that is known as the Federal Reserve.
Ron, you should have overturned the apple cart while you had the chance.

Very well said! If it’s okay, I will pass on your remarks along with the statement by Ron Paul to some friends and colleagues ofmine. I too have this feeling in my gut that perhaps RP was “part of the game”, or that at the very least he didn’t go as far as he could have in the debates, as well as on TV during interviews with mainstream media. But of course, he is in his seventies and his wife has been severely ill, as well as one of his top staff died during the run, so I will give him some slack. I guess it is now up to US to take the ball and role with it, using RPs principles, but adding to it what he “forgot” to say and do. Thanks!

The first bailout was voted down and Congress said the voice of the people has been heard. When the criminal Senate unconstitutionally drew up a worse bailout package and the Wall Street lobby blitzed Congress, our Representatives changed their vote.
It doesn’t take rocket science to figure out our lawmakers are prostitutes who will provide any service for the right price…….
