Publication admits that characteristics of economic slowdown resembles 1930’s

Renowned financial publication The Economist reports that, based on the characteristics of the current financial crisis, the U.S. is in a depression, not a recession.
The admission marks the first time that a major international financial news outlet has acknowledged that the scale of the economic mess is unlike anything seen in recent decades.
Under the headline, Diagnosing depression, the article asks, “What is the difference between a recession and a depression?”
A depression is characterized by “falling asset prices, a credit crunch and deflation,” according to the article, all factors that we see unfolding in the current crisis.
(ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)
“A depression is the result of a bursting asset and credit bubble, a contraction in credit, and a decline in the general price level,” according to the article. “In the Great Depression average prices in America fell by one-quarter, and nominal GDP ended up shrinking by almost half.”
Fast forward to the start of 2009 and house prices have fallen by at least 17 per cent over the last two years with that number only set to plunge further over the coming 18 months. Overall, American homeowners have lost $2 trillion of equity during what has become the worst housing slump since World War II.
U.S. GDP in the fourth quarter last year fell an estimated six per cent, but that number is expected to accelerate through 2009.
The piece also states that assurances from economists who say that a repeat of the 1930’s is impossible “because policymakers are unlikely to repeat the mistakes of the past,” are coming from the same people who confidently predicted that “a nationwide fall in American house prices was impossible and that financial innovation had made the financial system more resilient.”
The Economist piece makes the argument that the current crisis is far closer to a depression than a recession and that the only question remaining is how deep the downturn will be.

I for one, am waiting for the real fun to begin. FEMA camps being staffed, yuppied starving, running out of beer and being unable to afford gas for the behemoth H3 Hummers and having to make real sacrifices. Only when people suffer do they really begin to change how they think and live. Besides being long overdue, this depression is a mixed blessing in that it can awaken people to the real world around them. With some luck, they may even begin asking questions and demanding some answers.

Hal Turner is apparently telling people that something BIG is going to happen - and not to worry about it.
So worry about it.
I have a document - first responders training manual. It mentions some kind of “exercise” in February 2009. And the digital transition will occur sometime after that. As I understand it, the Ham Radios will no longer work after the transition. I suspect that will be the time when the round up begins and because the digitial communications system is a controlled system, there will be no way to communicate what’s happening outside of officially controlled channels.

Vicky,
I’m a firefighter, is this a manual I might have access to? If not, anyway I can obtain a copy? I’m sure many others would love a copy too. I’d be happy to scan it into an electronic format and upload it somewhere.

No, it’s not a depression yet. Unemployment is still around 7 percent and the stock market is down by about 40%. This is what perma-bulls consider a depression to be like. The fact that so many people are anticipating a bottom in these falling markets tells me that there’s still a long way to go. When the real bottom finally arrives, there will be no interest in the stock market, and anyone who rightly invests in the market at that time will be considered a fool. I look for some mild “corrective” upward movement in 2009, followed by the biggest crash in the history of the United States.
Duane Phinney Reply:

Unemployment is much higher than 7%, they only count people getting a check. I your benefits have run out, you do not exist. In California it’s over 10% now. In the large cities it’s 15%+. The rest of the world is worse shape, they all depend on the US buying the goods they produce. The credit bubble has burst, game over.
January 2nd, 2009 at 7:23 am
Well the reality is that this depression is the continuation of the Great Depression. It is a massive tool that can cut segments of the population up and starve a good portion of them. See they force you to obey and support the governmental systems and then later on you learn the hard way that you were robbed.
Odds are that ultimately the USA is going to be balkanized. It will not even get bloody. Most will go quietly in the night! Freezing, smelly, homeless people that will do anything for a MRE. Most of those people will be the ones that stepped over all of the regular homeless prior to the “New Depression”

WHO issues those UNEMPLOYMENT statistics???
THE GOVERNMENT
Who was fibbing about the nation being in a RECESSION for over a year not so long ago??
THE GOVERNMENT
Believe what you like but down is down!
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:22 am
Well the same mis information is still being spewed by our corporate media. Apparently some people must still be listening. For people without computers and internet connecttions there is still no real news. You will never hear a guy like Alex Jones broadcast over the free airwaves where the general public can hear them. The truth is still getting it’s ass kicked and the hour is getting late.
Our government is manned mostly by stupid people who I wouldn’t hire to mow my lawn. Their best trait is selling themselves to the highest bidder. They are traitors and war criminals. Progresive and conservative talk show’s are nothing but gate keeper site. Even the most radical of them won’t touch or go near the ugly truth’s of what really happened or is happening.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:46 am
you fucking fools we have been in a depression since gas prices went ballistic in may 08 and were in a recession for years before that but no one wanted to admit it. my friends pool company was building 2,100 pools a year and for the last two years less than 500 pools a year. so eat shit shelock.
January 2nd, 2009 at 8:49 am
The Unemployment statistics are a fraud. Mr. X collects unemployment for 6 months and then upon receipt of his last check is issued a survey card. It asks, “Please tell us where you found YOUR NEW JOB!” Once Mr. X is done collecting he is put back on the rolls of the EMPLOYED PEOPLE when he in fact is about to be homeless! Complete FRAUD.
Your states may vary but in mine Unemployment is mainly conducted over the phone or on the Internet. In this way none of the Mr Xes will see each other like they did during Ronald Regan’s recession (depression). In those days the lines of unemployed circled around the building and down the street just for the INFORMATION LINE. All of that honesty is now concealed by cooked statistics and communication devices.
Believe what you like but there is no doubt in my mind that the books are cooked when it comes to anything that the government says. In my state the Governor is taking credit for a falling state highway fatality statistic over this past year. In reality gas prices here were around $4.00 per gallon so most people simply cut out all non essential driving hence skewed statistics!

Okay we all know its going to be bad. What can we do to survive this? Buy gold and food now is probably obvious. But can we better our chances by buying put options on the market and call options on gold/silver?????
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:22 am

OK you get all of this gold but the depression grows. There are bread lines in America again and shortages of EVERYTHING. So, to you I ask, “#14 do you have any good recipes for that gold?” and “Can you burn that gold to stay warm?”

Well, personally, I think that to address some of the comments in here, real, physical, you can lay your hands on it type Gold and Silver, are much better than *fairy tale papers* saying you have gold and silver sitting in a vault somewhere.
They will do you absolutely no good, if you cannot get your hands on the gold or silver they represent. Much like your weapons will not do you any good in a fight, if you can not produce it quickly and know how to use it.
If the banks have to liquidate all of their gold and silver, they will surely pile your certificates in along with their assets, and then tell you… Oops. Look at the banks that collapsed in 2008, where they paid their customers 1/2 of what the customer had, in good faith, placed in their banks.
Yeah, I know the next argument, those people had over 100,000 dollars in assets.
The trick is, when the banks do truly collapse, there will not be an FDIC to back up, even the smallest claims, let alone the ones for over 100,000 dollars. FDIC is insurance, anyone think of any insurance companies that went bust last year? AIG ring any bells?
Paper money will be good for a trip to the bathroom, and save you *money* on toilet paper, but real, solid gold, will always have a *monetary* value, even in the worst economy. This is the reason when the dollar started tanking, everyone ran out and bought gold. it’s also the reason that all of the foreign countries bought our gold, and bought it cheap.
The American dollar is worth about 2 to 4 cents, depending on who’s pricing it, compared to the Dollar of 1912. So, our currency is getting to the point that it’s just about as worthless as the Zimbabwe currency… Paper is just that, paper.
I’m not saying go out and spend your nest egg on a couple of ounces of gold… I’m saying, go out, and get some real, solid assets, and set them aside, if you can. Just in case. Ebay and other on-line auction sites will yield many great returns on investment, if you know what your looking for. Otherwise, you WILL get ripped off. Always underbid on such sites, and factor in shipping and handling as well. If you do this, you can lay your hands on some solid assets, like gold and silver, without having to break your bank.

Soup kitchens have already started in my state. The food pantrys are not able to stock up, because of the lack of food donations coming in. The coal mines are laying off by the hundreds as well as the two main steel mills in this state. They just laid off hundreds. More people are applying for food stamps because those china mart jobs just don’t feed a family. This nation is a sh-t hole because of the crooks in control and it is going to get a lot worse.
I hope the dirty lot of them choke on their food the next fancy feast they have while the good Americans try to scratch a living from the ghost towns they have created.
January 2nd, 2009 at 10:24 am
for those who do not know this.. there is already a currency in the US that is circulating and is the “backup” for the poor in any depression or collapse.. its called the nickel and the pre 1982 copper pennies.. if you check, in the 1970’s Mcdonalds was giving free fries to anyone who paid in pennies, WHY? because there was none to be found in the banks.. THINK its all out there for people who THINK

Colt45: Good point, gold and silver are for those with extra money to throw around or those who intend on leaving the country at some point. For those of us who have to manage our money in a tighter environment, gold and silver is not better than food, water and personal survival gear.
As for the depression being based off of unemployment, I don’t think that’s a good way to look at it. Also consider, colleges are a huge refuge for those who aren’t working because they’re living off of loans, grants or the Montgomery GI Bill. WHen these funds dry up or are harder to get because of more competition, watch the numbers soar.

Ways to stretch your money;or what will happen when we don’t have any money.
1.)Buy bulk sacks of staples such as various varieties of beans, brown rice, wheat, corn, milo, lentils, peas, powered milk, salt, sugar, rolled oats, home canned and anything else you can think of.Five gallon bottles of propane for cooking and beg, buy ,borrow new or used five gallon buckets w/lids for storing most everything.
Expect electricity to to be history which makes any electic items mostly useless especially freezers and refers.
2.)As the vise tightens insurance industries will be hammered, cash in life ins.policies stop auto payments, auto ins.,in fact ins.of all kinds-hoard cash stop paying all non-essential services.Stop paying property taxes, etc. You have three years for redemption.Home buyers can stall eviction for at least a year, that’s a lot of time.
3.) Use your ingenuity and imagination.Don’t spend money on eating out and any other non-essential habits that fritter your money away.Doing it now makes it much less traumatic than when the shtf, practice makes perfect.
4.) Forget going into the great outdoors where all the fools are going to go,you will be much safer in your own area and home and be more able to develop a neighborhood care system.
Turn your yard into a garden, now.Root crops(potatoes, carrots, beets, etc.) are easy to grow and store,no processing required.
When the shtf nobody wants to trade their survival supplies for ??????????????Most of us have our own best interest in mind, not yours.Get started now.
5.) If you really believe this is going to happen convert your toys into useful ????????????
LOTS OF LUCK——See you on the other side.

Set up a system where people can vote on every major bill or policy. If enough people want this it can be set up. It could be done through a phone system or internet site where you confirm your identity and then vote. Send this message to 10 other people. If we put enough pressure on Barak be might do this… he’s the only president who’s actually listenened to the people in a long time. Phone or internet system where people vote on every major policy. When BILLIONS and TRILLIONS of our tax money is being tossed around as if it wasn’t ours you know that things need to change.

So sad to see people asking real questions and getting spat on for it..
Tip for the people asking about buying gold and silver ..
BUY BATTERIES !!!!
They are small enough, and cheap enough that people can buy extra everytime they are at the market.. hopefully u never have to sell them for a markup, and at the end of the year u can donate them to a worthy charity..
Just an idea for people on fixed incomes who cannot afford to buy gold and silver… If there is an emergency you will have a “product” that will soar in value in the event of a “SCENARIO”
i DONT KNOW HOW ALEX PUTS UP WITH ALL THE NONESENSE ON THESE BOARDS!!!
Why dont we all respect each other and have civil arguments when the times arise.. We are so lucky we have this forum to discus these issues.. I learn so much from the people on these comments it would be a shame for this to have to stop because of petty grades school name calling…
TO ALL WHO SOAR ABOVE THE FRAY AND STAY CIVIL THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR KNOWLEDGE!!!!
merry new year to all HAPPY 2009!!!

Well maybe the answer would be to leave the sinking ship on rafts that you know exist, Once the ship gets into the main plunge the suck will come and no one will be able to escape. There are some nice islands called hawaii with a nice stable food system and plenty of fishing!
Theres also many tropical islands that will not sink from global warming and gores lies!
My 2 cents!

About the batteries post,
very good idea and in fact I would also suggest getting an “Inverter” to change 12 volt battery energy into 110v house current, look into them,a good unit can produce 3000 watts of power and could be maintained with a 1 wire alternator or 12 volt generator wind or water system.this is my way of avoiding blackouts and to this day,I have never been without lights and an information outlet no matter how long the power is off.

Malachi4…
I like all your points except #4. If you have a tight knit community it might work, However the inner cites are going to become crime hot-zones with rioting and general civil unrest. When everyone is losing their jobs and no one can afford their meds or even food this chemically addicted nation is gonna go bonkers. If you live in the city you should have a few exit plans, and survival skills will be allot more valuable than stocking up on supplies you cant carry with you that might be stolen or confiscated. When it does finally go down in this country, it will end up far worse than most imagine possible.

How much longer will you support your slave masters?
The Federal Reserve bankers have destroyed your money for their own filthy benefit. Civilized society breaks down without a functioning commercial system. Your family is going to suffer from the crimes of the Federal Reserve bankers.
Are you going to support them when they offer a new currency for you to use?
Are you going to continue to support these criminals that exploit your family?
You are being taken from a ride. Your hard-earned money is being stolen from you and most Americans don’t even comprehend how it is happening. Worst of all, our children and grandchildren are facing terrible times if we let this continue.
All we need to do to unseat our rulers is stop using their money. When we switch to an alternative currency their system will fall. The central banks will dissolve and their political actors will be out of a job.

Its good to read everyone’s remarks; many helpful viewpoints, thank you all. However, the average trend has being down for many years now with some ups along the way. This is being going on for quite a while now because almost everyone in power from middle management (with a few exceptions) up to the elite are bad medicine for the rest of us because they only cared about themselves. An economist named Dobson I believe, once said that if there are more corrupt and unrighteous people running the country (as well as the average person) than the good and righteous, the economy and the country itself will eventually collapse. And since the SWW this has certainly being the case. The US will be humbled and brought down to its knees and it will cease to exist as a country with very terrible consequences for everybody. The reign of the white English speaking peoples is rapidly coming to an end because the US is the pillar for all these people since the SWW. Most things that Mr. Jones is saying is true, but there is one point I disagree with him on. The US will not rise again; The badies will win for now as they are too powerful to defeat; they will totally destroy the US, GB, Australia etc within a few years, and Europe (supported by the NWO, to become the Beast) and Eurasia will rise to do battle for dominance of the Earth and its resources, and there is nothing you and me can do about it. It will take a powerful unseen hand from someplace to intervene and restore proper law and order and finally peace. I am sorry everyone, but that is the reality of it all. It will be done to us; we are not able to do it ourselves, the evidence and facts are clear.

There are loads of empty new houses in CA so like why cant we give them to people who need one and then no more depression. prob solved.

Obama is going to give everyone a new house and a new Denali , Black people will get a house and a new Escalade with 20 inch spinners.
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:45 pm
Regarding the Economist estimation that we are in a depression, I find their reasoning
spurious. They neglected to state that house prices in the last 7 years increased in
value by approximately 300% so in order for it to equate to the 1929 Depression
there would need to be a 66% decline in prices just to get back to where they were
in 2000.
January 2nd, 2009 at 6:56 pm
Regarding #51’s insinuation that we are not in a Depression spurious — besides housing there are ten zillion other indicators currently telling us, screaming at us — that the Greatest Depression is gaining momentum and magnitude.

0% intrust then how will the banks make money? If the banks arnt making money then they wont be loaning money. They charge you a small intrust fee so you can by your home now or start your business now it is when you lie and take more then you can possibly repay that you affect others. more control should be made by the banks and they should not loan money to those that have a history of not paying it back and we all know what races they are.

Post #31 talks about a neighborhood care system. That won’t work. I happen to live in a “nice” town home community in Atlanta and have witnessed the same soggy newspaper sitting on the sidewalk within 10 feet of 3 driveways and no one could spend the energy to pick it up and put it in the trash…..(I did after 5 days, it was a test to see if anyone else cared to do so). There is no sense of community and people are generally selfish and have NO clue what it is to really work. A neighborhood of these types of people will never “come together and grow crops!”
This sounds silly, but the other day I bought a really powerful break barrel air rifle and about 1000 rounds of pellets. There are enough fat squirrels around here…I will hunt them for food. I just don’t have the stomach to process the carcass. Hopefully I will just be hungry enough to just do it. Another poster thought about 12v inverters for AC power, great idea to have a few around. I have had them fail, but they are very handy. Also a STEEL garbage can is a good idea for a place to burn stuff. Living in the city area will be hard in an all out desperation scenario. I will probally have to leave with my wife and escape to Upstate New York where my parents live. My car will just need under 40 gallons of gas to get there. Listen, I am the last person who would ever think that I would have to be like a Mel Gibson in Road Warrior, but just think about 8 million people in Atlanta area and we will run out of food in about 3 days. We already had a gas shortage here the last hurricane and there were plenty of people hoarding gas. If there is an all out crisis with food availability it all will be gone in 3 days for sure. It is scary. The only thing that the US govt. will help us with is stuffing us in some of those 500,000 plastic coffins in GA!!!!!
January 2nd, 2009 at 9:04 pm
In the Atlanta, GA suburbs, there is an area that had very large “castle like” homes with court yards that were listed for $700-800k last summer, now they are listed for $299-399k and not one is sold. The community of about 20 homes is empty. The few that I saw sold last summer are now vacant and boarded up as the owners fled and probally turned the keys in at the bank. The weeds are up to my shoulders in the yards.
This is not the only neighborhood to fall victim. This is in the Lawrenceville, GA area about 25 miles NE of ATL. There are also areas within ATL where they started building nice houses in bad neighborhoods where the new homes in these communities can’t be sold for 30% of their original listed price.
I fix computers in the ATL area and when I go to large offices I find sometimes an over capacity of EMPTY desks and cubicles only to wonder why or how they keep building commercial space in Buckhead and ATL.
Wonder why this isn’t more reported, guess many people are just living in a fog.

Watson has just blown his career. It is not permitted to speak the truth and get published in the Western media. Put heads back in the sand everyone, Obama will soon save you. Adios Watson.

Dear Mr. Obama: Please send your youth brigade over to fix these pot-holes on my street. I know they will be so happy to have such a promising career. And if they don’t do a good job, I know what you will tell them: “No soup for you!”

It i9s dumb to publiciase a depression. It’s what they want. When the value is squeezed out of everything, they will buy it for pennies. It’s what they did in 1929. It’s what lead directly to fascism in Europe when local Jews bought up business with American money.

How long do you think Americans are going to be homeless well all these 200,000$ homes sit unattended? 5 4 3 2 Let the Illuminati make their own bed and we will lie them in it.
January 3rd, 2009 at 4:40 am
Also it is’nt Alex Jones or Ron Paul or Jesse the body thats going to save you and your family. Its you. We see what procrastination brings so stop saying “OK start the revolution!”, “I’m stading here with my Dick in my hand” Its your duty to get fired up and do something and at this point I dont care what but dont think a soldier charges over a hill just because someone told him to do it. Lead the fucking charge and stop looking for a hero.

Hopefully this is a permanent depression and the elite are never again able to artificially inflate asset prices. The elite make the depression worse partly to condition us to think the lie that the boom is the good time, no, the boom is what causes the miss-allocation of wealth.

It will be a depression when food prices start falling. Everything else already says “depression”. Denial does not change the facts. Better circle the wagons!
January 3rd, 2009 at 7:37 am
Maybe the US will collapse and communities can flourish again.
January 3rd, 2009 at 6:38 pm
Why worry if its a depression yet or not, all indicators call for a much worse year. Let those with theories and formula crunch the false numbers to their heart’s content. The average man will face scenarios as yet unknown (unintended consequences). You’ll never make it if you try to go it alone. Progress cannot be made by one person trying to survive. There is safety in numbers as long as ya’ll think similiarly, but also with a view to the future and somewhat out of the box. In fact you may be safest and most free near a military base, always something to think about. For you can be sure if martial law is declared it will not be American soldiers patrolling the streets with orders to shoot any curfew violators. You certainly don’t want to be out in BF Egypt only to realize there are hourly air patrols just for the purpose of sending you to an internment camp for trespassing. Or poaching.

Incremental conditioning. They do these things in planned phases. It all works together collectively as a mass psychological operation of conditioning the sheeple to the normalization of deeper and deeper levels of tyranny.
What we are approaching, is a global government dominated by evil, which will micro manage the masses, with the appearance of humanitarianism and legitimacy. Here is a list of the most recent and important “shifts” as we descend:
Economic recession/depression
Increasing crime rates
loss of confidence
Monies stolen and missallocated flagrantly flaunted in the publics face- normalizing it, creating more of the “what can I do about it?” mentality of acceptance.
Constant demoralization agenda from all directions
An athenian parade of sporting events, video games, shows, and other distractions and pacifications which are trivial, and far less important than what needs to be addressed.
The normalization of government secrecy
The normalization of BIG BROTHER methodology
The demonization of firearms in the hands of the general public AKA peasantry
Terrorism
Wars
Civil unrest
Natural disasters
Man made natural disasters
Bogus “global warming” junk science
Theres alot more, but who cares. They are creating the “problems”, and normalizing facism and tyranny as the only viable “solutions”.
Until we outlaw secrecy in the government, and secret societies, fully restore the Republic/Constitution and arrest all the suspected assholes scamming us- the economic or otherwise forcast can only be grim. No matter what it might look like temporarily, we are on the steady descent into total tyranny/hell on earth.

I’m sorry, but the article cited clearly does NOT say the U.S. is in depression. How could anyone who read that article reach such a conlcusion? The article also ends by suggesting the U.S. is UNLIKELY to experience any depression at all, as a result of the current crisis. While i do appreciate this website, there’s plenty of real news to cover without fabricating.

The article does NOT say we are in depression. It says thats it POSSIBLE for us to fall into a depression like the 1930’s but it DOUBTS it.
My god..disinformation disinformation.

So why aren’t any of you doing anything about it?
All I read from you morons is “the government is stupid”.
So do something.
I did.
I walked into my city councilman’s office and said “I’m ready to serve”.
Within a year’s time I now serve my city and I’m preparing a run at my State Senate.
But I suppose this probably what? Mkes me part of “them”?
Incidently, I’ve asked this of a lot of conspiracy theorists, much like you all, who exactly is “them” anyway?
Noone seems to know, but apparently “they’re” all powerful and all knowing.
Interesting.
The political thinker Machaveilli teaches us that if you’re in power, and you have to tick off someone it’s better to tick off the people. Because you won’t anger them all, and those that you do, are too weak and feeble to really do anything about it.
So why would I, someone who’s about to rely on public votes to get elected come to a message board and openly mock you?
Simple, you’re weak and feeble and in reality, have absolutely no bearing on the outcome of society.
I don’t need you to win anything, and in truth, aligning myself with the vast overwhelming majority that thinks you’re all nut jobs is the smarter move anyway.
You want to REALLY change something?
Great. I’ll see you on the floor of Congress.
Good luck.
