Late-night drunken messages could be a thing of the past.

Google email users can use a new feature called Mail Goggles, which reduces the risk of emailing angry or emotional missives that they may later regret.

When sending an email, Mail Goggles throws up five simple maths problems on the screen.

You can choose beforehand how much time it would take you to solve the problems, presumably sober.

If you manage to answer the calculations correctly in the time allotted, you are deemed of sound enough mind to send the email. And presumably deal with the consequences.

Gmail engineer Jon Perlow designed the Goggles with his own weaknesses in mind.

‘Sometimes I send messages I shouldn’t send. Like the time I told that girl I had a crush on her over text message.
