  • The in-car computer that makes speeding history… by slowing down vehicle if it’s going too fast

    Paul Sims
    UK Daily Mail
    Monday, May 11, 2009

A sophisticated in-car computer could soon make it impossible for motorists to speed.
The system detects the speed limit and automatically slows the car if it is being driven too quickly.

It pinpoints a vehicle’s exact location via satellite and accesses a database of every road’s speed limit to determine how fast the vehicle should be travelling.

The Intelligent Speed Adaption system will be unveiled today as part of the largest-ever pilot of its kind.

It is seen as a blueprint for a nationwide scheme which could add around £500 to the cost of a car.

But critics last night claimed that it was further evidence of state interference.
They say it undermines motorists’ freedom and claim it could hinder, rather than aid, road safety.

The trial is being carried out by Transport for London (TfL) which runs buses, trains, the Underground and major roads in the capital.

    1. Car Parts Says:

After that Carbonite will automatically go to sleep when you’re using your computer so as not to slow it or your Internet connection down. Car Parts

    2. jeff Says:

So I guess if someone has an emergency(like a hospital trip or the need to escape and evade crminals) they will be SOL……..

      Amish Bob Reply:

Time to close all the beer outlets as well so people dont drink and drive.

      Charles Reply:

We should also ban money, as money is used to buy that very beer.

And ban work, as work is used to generate money for the worker.

    3. Rosco P Coltrain Says:

But then they wouldn’t make any money off of speeding violations?

      Charles Reply:

No need for that, they’ll just print some money to make up for it.

    4. global plantation serf Says:

They already have speed limiters, for rentals (I know this I am not guessing), although it is just a mechanical or electrical modification. My neighbor put that in his trucks so employees can’t beat up his vehicles so it must be fairly easy.

And I don’t think they care if you are late for a meeting or have to get the emergency room.

Also doesn’t this punish everyone to have this extra weight and don’t speed?

      Marine Reply:

Trucks, buses, Taxi’s all have mechanical “governer’s” the diesels have had them since 1950’s cabs since the 70’s. now they can add to the ECM of the vehicle(gas engines) and same thing governed!!!

    5. wrath of ed Says:

thats right…..punish the whole …for the crimes of the few!!…..and if that is how they want to be …why obey at all!!!…and if you notice?…..most drive in the left …tailgating at 70 …talking on the cell…bunch of hyper ..careless ,fuckups…..if i were a cop not one of those asses would get a break!!!…NONE!….when the shootings start is when the lazy, stupid jackbooted asses will crack down !…..only language u UMC sponges understand!!…..help me!help me!…

      Amish Bob Reply:

if this gets rid of pigs them im all for it.

    6. SpeedFlux Says:

If the cops who want catch the criminals car, will it get slower too ?

    7. Halfbreedmowhawk Says:

Fuck you…Shove your nanny state up your ass…

    8. molotovmouse Says:

Likely it will just be used to send you a citation in the mail saying you where speeding, can’t wait to get tickets for going 36mph in a 35.

    9. deweycee Says:

if the cops are too busy shooting old folk and children to sit behind a billboard with a speed gun…then i should get to haul ass on the hiway. besides, don’t they have VASCAR and cameras everywhere? Didn’t i already pay for those? why does a car need to cost $1,000 more? Safety? judging by the performance of law enforcement on BOTH side of the pond, imma choose to run with the scissors.

    10. grumpyhillbilly Says:

Nothing to worry about, the establishment would never allow itself to loose all that money from speeding tickets, this will just be useless technology.

      Amish Bob Reply:

      i agree with you .

      Madman Reply:

All well and good, but what if it has a phone home tattle tail device, that will let you speed, but automatically issues you a ticket, when you drive over the speed, while then dropping your speed down to a safe level?

That way, the cops get their donut, you get your ticket.. and the police make MORE money because the car rats you out.

    11. JF Says:

Thank God, my car doesn’t have all those electronic gizmos! Best thing to do, never drive a new car, stick with the older models without the computerized this and that and be tracked like sheep. No thanks. I agree with Halfbreed, stick the nanny state up whatever orifice you choose.

    12. Lord Haw Haw Says:

Like a post said it will let you speed to a point where a ticket can be issued and then slow yeah down.

    13. Madman Says:

Well this will free up Police to do other *vital* work, like eating donuts, and killing anyone who distrust their government.

    14. peon Says:

The American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Fourth Edition (DSM IV), defines oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) as a recurrent pattern of negativistic, defiant, disobedient, and hostile behavior toward authority figures that persists for at least 6 months.

so …. we’re all just ODD?

    15. Viakin Says:

This won’t work. City collects too much money from tickets. We all know cops have “quotas.” I also imagine this would create a very small loss to oil companies.

    16. johnny Says:

Trucking companies have had governors on there vehicles for years , its nothing new in the commercial sector. But I don’t think its a good idea because there maybe an emergency situation where time is critical such as driving someone to the hospital or changing lanes , besides the cities collect millions of dollars per year in speeding violations.

    17. Tyler Says:

You can bet that Police cruisers will not be equipped with these monitors. And yes it also means in an emergency instead of just rushing to the hospital you can just wait patiently for “authorities” to come help you.

As the next step I would envision something along the lines of those car theft protections added in, being able to shut a car down remotely. I’m sure it will be billed as “stopping criminals from getting away”, but in reality it can simply shut off any car of someone they want to stop, i.e., protestors against the state.

    18. Charlie Says:

That level of control would make me so angry I think I’d have to stop driving at all. It would be like wearing a leash.
Plus imagine the action movies, don’t hijack anything new unless you’re a computer hacker or a mutant who can manipulate electronics

    19. global plantation serf Says:

If they send a signal to your car, or, your car detects some sign then maybe you can block it!

    20. Jon Klement Says:

What about the streams of revenue generated by ticketing speeders? Won’t law enforcement agencies and local governments miss those?
