Well put Lee. Concise, direct, to the point, economical and pithy. I don't see where anything more needs to be added. Bravo, my brother.

After Nagin was absolutely skewered by the press, etc. for the Katrina debacle, a bit of overreaction and overhyping was a natural reaction to be expected.

Yes, there is militarization, etc.- but the reaction here is nothing other than evidence of a rational thought process.

Had the storm made landfall just 40 to 45 miles east of where it did, the surges might have potentially backed-up the Mississippi River and caused destruction like we have never seen. The lake is one thing, but the river is a faucet that just doesn't turn off. They were right to evacuate the city. I encouraged everyone I know to leave, to just take an inconvenient vacation and insure that their lives were not in danger. As for myself, I stayed for my own reasons and my life is, after all, my own to risk.

Though I agree whole-heartedly that conditioning, militarization, and wholesale corruption are taking place, I must share this with you. I stayed in New Orleans the entire time during Gustav and it was really an inspiring experience. The Police and National Guard that I encountered, both during the day and after curfew, were incredibly human. They were with us and there was an overwhelming sense of being in this together. The NOPD officers were sheltered in the convention center during the storm and though the conditions were INFINITELY better than they were for the people who were there after Katrina, this was no picnic for our officers. As soon as the winds began to subside our officers, as well as the National Guard, were out in full force. I mean I saw them everywhere. This would have been a much scarier experience had not every officer and soldier I encountered been 1st class human beings. I had a Springfield 1911A1 .45 openly strapped to my thigh during many of these encounters, I was never once asked to disarm and no one came to remove me from my home.

This was not Katrina II.

The point of being inspiring is this; the men on the street were people just like us. They sat trough the storm with us, and when the few restaurants in my neighborhood opened immediately after the storm they dined with us, joked with us, and they watched out for us while at the same time allowing us to look out for ourselves.

I realize that when the time comes, they'll use Mexican and Canadian troops to do there dirty work for them, but as for our guys in this particular experience... I'm proud of every one of them. Thank you.

I wonder how many homes and businesses were deep searched, how many bugs planted etc; while everyone was forced to be out of the way. I wonder what else they were doing while they had free range of the places which they couldn't have done if the people were still around as witnesses.
