A desperate 59-year-old Spanish man facing eviction from his home has committed suicide, the third such death since October amid rising public outrage over repossessions.
he man, named locally as Manuel Reguera, was unemployed and owed 4,200 euros on his rented flat in Santesteban, Navarra. He killed himself within hours of receiving an eviction order, police said.
His was the third eviction-related suicide in Spain in recent weeks and serves to highlight the severity of the crisis affecting those unable to keep up payments on their homes.
An estimated 400,000 home owners have been evicted since the start of Spain’s economic crisis in 2008, which has the nation mired in recession and a 25 per cent unemployment rate.
