Ireland went to the polls today in a crucial referendum that could pave the way for Tony Blair to become president of Europe.
Moves to install the former Prime Minister as the EU supremo will speed up if voters in Ireland support the despised Lisbon Treaty in today’s referendum.
The new all-powerful post can only be created if the rejigged European Constitution is rubber-stamped by all 27 member states.
The Irish look almost certain to vote ‘Yes’ to the huge Brussels power grab – just a year after rejecting it in their original poll. The pro-EU campaign is 15 points ahead.
The only obstacle in Mr Blair’s path is if Poland and the Czech Republic refuse to ratify the treaty, but Irish approval will mount pressure on their governments to approve it.
