Troops gather on Georgian border

It’s easy to see how things could spiral out of control: the two sides are braced for combat. At Ergneti on Georgia’s border with South Ossetia, Georgian military police stand guard behind high barricades made of sandbags and two metre-high slabs of concrete. Out of sight barely 20 metres away, the forces of South Ossetia and Russia are mustered behind barricades of their own, their national flags fluttering.

The tranquility of the rolling green fields and lush vineyards belie it, but many fear that another summer war between Russia and Georgia like the one 11 months ago which killed hundreds of civilians is no more than a stutter of automatic gunfire away from breaking out. And if it happens, this standoff at Ergneti could be the flashpoint.

In the valley below is Tskhinvali, the South Ossetian capital. Today it shimmers in the heat but last August it was the epicentre of the war as the forces of the Russian Federation punished the Georgian army for asserting its right to rule the ethnically distinct entity of South Ossetia on its northern edge.

The tension is palpable. And the fear today is that this time, the Russian forces may carry out what last year they only threatened and topple the regime of the Western-leaning Georgian President, Mikheil Saakashvili.

Russian troops this week embarked on large-scale war games in the North Caucasus, just a few dozen miles away, preparation for “potential conflict situations in the region,” the generals say. Similar exercises preceded the war last summer.

Perhaps that is what it will take for Americans to wake up to the fact that our government are warmongerors. When they occupy our cities and kill our civillians it will be another story but alas a lesson learned too late. Kudos to Russia for being smart enough to know by now America is your best friend who is plotting to be your worst nightmare. Russia doesn’t bow to Obama so it means war eventually so they can gain control of all countries. That is why US keeps china close. If China and Russia unite against us maybe it will topple the evil government of the UN.

That will never happen. Any one or two countries, china or russia would be crazy to attemp an invasion of america. All america would unite and throw any expeditionary force right into the see. Im not defending the government or saying americans are smart. But we would unite as a strong and cohesive fighting force, and god haver mercy on anyone against us at that point

You are absolutely right and the same goes for Russia and China. No one wants foreign troops in their nation. Only small nations can’t resist end up with that fate. Nuclear proliferation seems more logical under those terms.

Well,from time to time now Paris is getting mighty busy playing un-american diplomatic games with Berlin and Moscow as it did when US invaded Iraq so you have to set them straight first.
You can for example capture Normandy again ,march to their capitol and force France to capitulate.Drop an atom bomb on them,and as history proved with Japan,The GREAT NATION OF FRANCE will be ready to come to your assistance – just promise them some influence down in Quebec – who needs Canada’s integrity anyway…

That’s interesting considering all Russian news is cooing over Obama and new relations. This Monday they are shutting down the whole city for Obama as if Caesar is coming to town. I don’t buy any story that Europe is plotting against the US. They have disagreements and tiffs, but nothing near direct confrontation. Hope it stays that way.
