Cops moving away from role of public servants, assuming God-like status

New laws set to be passed in England and Canada would make it illegal to use bad language or take photographs of police officers, moving us further away from the idea of police as public servants and more towards the notion of cops assuming God-like status.
According to the British Journal of Photography, the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008, which is set to become law on February 16, “allows for the arrest and imprisonment of anyone who takes pictures of officers ‘likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing an act of terrorism’.” The punishment for this offense is imprisonment for up to ten years and a fine.
However, even before the passage of the legislation, police in Britain have already been harassing and arresting fully accredited press photographers merely for taking pictures of them at rallies and protests.
Besides the 4.2 million CCTV cameras in Britain, one for every fourteen people, Police are now equipped with mobile surveillance vans and head mounted cameras and they routinely videotape everyone at a protest, yet anyone attempting to record them has been met with increasing hostility.
(ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW)
Justin Tallis, a London-based photographer, was taking pictures of the anti-BBC protest this past weekend when he was approached by an officer. The officer demanded to see his photographs and when Talis refused the officer tried to seize his camera, arguing that Tallis ’shouldn’t have taken that photo, you were intimidating me’.
“The incident lasted just 10 seconds, but you don’t expect a police officer to try to pull your camera from your neck,” Tallis told BJP.
“The police are arresting journalists, seizing their equipment, treating them as suspects, looking at their photographs, taking copies, perhaps returning them to them, taking no further action often (but not always) and they’ve got, straight away, what they want,” solicitor Mike Schwartz of Bindman and Partners told a UK National Union of Journalists conference.
“At every demonstration, the police are figuratively scratching their heads as to how they can get hold of your material. That’s what they’re after.”
“The police take action, they often get what they want, and allow the lawyers in court to mop up what’s happened afterwards. That’s one of the trends and areas where there is a real problem: the police arresting journalists and seizing their material in order to use it in prosecutions.”
An incident captured on camera and uploaded to You Tube proves that some police officers in Britain already think that is is against the law to film them.
Film-maker Darren Pollard was clearing up flood debris from his front garden when he noticed the police harassing a youth opposite his house. Darren retrieved his camera and began filming the officers. After noticing Pollard, the officers approached and then tried to claim that it was illegal to film them. After being informed by their superior that it was not illegal to film police, the officers left the scene.
Watch the clip below.
Meanwhile, in Montreal Canada, Montreal police are asking the city to outlaw bad or insulting language used against police officers, making it illegal for members of the public to call cops profanity-laced nicknames, or lob jeers, such as “pig” and “doughnut-eater.”
“Chablo said several municipalities across Quebec – including Quebec City – have some variation of a law that prohibits citizens from spewing slurs at police officers,” reports the Canadian Press.
“There are an awful lot of words that are borderline and it’s highly subjective – it’s too vague,” said Ronald Sklar, a McGill University law professor, said of the police union’s proposal.
What’s next? How long before we have to officially salute or even get down and lick some boots?
The vast majority of people respect police officers and the dangerous work they undertake, but when people committing no crimes are being harassed and having their rights taken away while police are being given more rights to crack down on the public, the balance is tipping dangerously away from cops being public servants funded by the taxpayer and more towards them assuming a superior role in society, ruling over the scum with an iron fist.

It is universally recognized that cameras and other recording devices are the only true weapon against corrupt or otherwise abusive law enforcement. In the UK, its the only thing left! Don’t let this law pass if you value your family and the children they’ll have. Stop being Sheepals. Stand up and be heard. Be a Human being, not an animal herded into yet another cage.

You made me laugh
do you think they are going to ask the public whether or not to pass the law?
99% of new laws and legislation are passed in parliament which is also corrupt
So the laws pass overnight, while you are asleep, they have been doing it for the last 10 years.
The good news is that now the Euro equals the pound and we are entering the single currency.
wonderfulllllllllll!!!
£15 = £16 isn’t that fantastic?
they are forcing the British people to join the Euro one way or the other, they know that people DO NOT WANT to join the euro so now they dropping the pound to force people to join the euro, I am waiting to see the pound go under the Euro, I am positive this what’s going to happen.
These dogs won’t stop at anything.

Legitimate gun owners were compelled to register their firearms at a cost of $2 billion to taxpayers. No surprise that the program has failed to improve public safety — the crooks were exempt from complying by default.
Though our weapons maybe not have been physically taken, they have definitely been over-regulated and over-policed. The authorities now have the right to search your property without a warrant for even the slightest suspicion you might have been involved in a crime. Heil Harper!

Never let your freedoms and rights be taken away. You can make a difference if you chose to.

Yes, half of the police officers don’t S*** about the law, as someone mentioned it above, they make laws as they go along, because they assume if they don’t know the law, what a chance an average citizen has to know his rights and the law in place.
But he left with his tail between his legs, the trouble is, they will keep an eye on this guy and they can make his life a real misery, they are hateful bastards, especially when they feel powerless and humiliated by not knowing the flaming law in the first place, they will take it on that poor guy.
I hope he is clever enough to contact his solicitor and get things straight, if any further harassment from the police he will press charges.
But then it is naive to assume that there’s a law that will protect you against the police force.
the judges are also corrupt, so we don’t stand a chance, what we need is to show them what we are made out of.

I don’t like swearing, and besides, if the police officer is talking to you, why do you have to use a foul language or insult him?
But as far as cameras and taking pictures are concerned they can go to hell, I will take pictures and if they don’t like it, tough, I will do what Darren did, ask them to show you the law and under what section it is.

TUse cell phone cameras and email footage to yourself and at least three other addresses INSTANTLY when you’ve got something (DO NOT WAIT). Stash DVD’s or mini-VHS’s somewhere hidden and secure where you can access them later. Have a laptop nearby onto which you can periodically upload existing footage before filming new events. Do your recording in bits and pieces, stashing away every new segment when practical, so that if your footage is illegally confiscated at least parts of it will be safe. Take a friend who would be responsible for burning copies on a laptop and uploading them to the web on the spot, so that recorded events are released to the public in near-real time.

I live in Montreal, and for almost a year now the police union has been protesting to the city. The protest started by having all police officers wear jeans and red baseball caps. I started noticing that some officers wore military style camouflage pants instead of jeans. This trend accelerated quickly and now it seems that all Montreal police officers wear these pants. In fact, it has been a few months since I have seen an officer who wasn’t wearing them. I have been seeing more and more police lately (since I am a student and travel allot by metro) due to the fact that the city has increased police presence in the metro (subway) since implementing a new microchip turnstile system. Of course, the city says that the reason for this increased police presence is “to make sure the new system runs smoothly”. Maybe I’m just paranoid, but it doesn’t really make me feel comfortable knowing that everybody in the city who uses a monthly metro pass is forced to travel with a permanent microchipped card on them. Having more and more police patrolling the metro and wearing military pants doesn’t add to my comfort either.

yes they are getting people used to the idea to see soldiers uniforms around, and before you know it, dictatorship will settle, and then they can do whatever the hell they want, they test the public if no reaction from the general public they keep pushing until their agenda is complete.
in few months you might not see a single police uniform, except police officers dressed like thugs, which they really are.

The UK police at one time wore Navy Blue uniforms.
Now they wear paramilitary black, go around ‘tooled up’ with
more paraphenalia than an SAS trooper and act tough. Oh, and most or none
have numbers on their uniforms – like the old coppers- so they can kick the shit out of you with impunity, and you can’t report them – because you don’t know who it was. Sound Orwellian ? It is….hence the photo ban.
Mind how you go!

I just had a look and I will also add that the Counter Terrorism Act 2008 also states just underneath
(b) publishes or communicates any such information.
So you could also be arrested for putting a recording of a police officer on YouTube.
January 28th, 2009 at 11:03 am
Makes about as much sense as “Fahrenheit 451″. Firemen can go out to start fires with flame throwers, and police that go out to commit crimes. We wouldn’t want to have any independent evidence, just state sponsored news showing edited news to fit the propaganda.
Maybe they ought to just start calling the news, public relations. FOX PR, and CPRN are already more accurate.
January 28th, 2009 at 11:35 am
The Police in the UK are not supported by the majority of the public anymore so they do not care. Therefore they are taking as many powers as possible while Brown is still a lame duck Prime Minister.
I do believe that at some point these sorts of actions by the Police will lead to serious violence and possibly some type of Civil War between the Police and the people of the UK. Last summer a shocking incident took place in Manchester where a Policeman was set upon by a mob of sports fans and could have been killed.
The pent up anger at the Police crosses all classes now and the Police are aware hence they stay in their Police Stations and only come out in numbers or in armoured cars/vans. This is why you never see any Police on the streets. Even PCSOs are now off the streets due to the situation getting worse in the UK.
This summer could see many flashpoints in many areas and it could turn very ugly. These sorts of laws create trouble.

Let’s see their psychological state of mind, all of sudden they have been issued with tasers, right?
and then they carry them all day, they need to provoke some people, just so they have an excuse to use them, they are in many cases like big kids.
They have a new toy so they must use it, otherwise it’s boring, and the people who issued these tasers to them, know exactly how to police behave.
There are very very few police officers who are wise and still use the old fashion approaches, they are still polite and patient with citizens, but it’s a fraction of the police force.
My brother in law was a police officer for 11 years, and now he resigned, he said they are recruiting real idiots and ex thugs, and that is from his mouth.

i’m with you dude , i reckon there’s gonna be some real trouble in the not too distant future . i don’t get how we could have ended up here in the first place . i mean , where was everyone ? what the hell were they thinking ? a man who protects his wife and kids from being raped and murdered is charged with assault and sent to prison ? we have severe firearms laws that heavily restrict only those who would legally possess and use firearms . the criminals , who we need to protect ourselves from , obtain and use firearms without restriction . gun crime is increasing with every new restrictive law that’s passed . let me put it like this . the way i see it , the British public made an unwritten and , to all intents and purposes , an unspoken contract , with the government . it goes something like ; ” we , the public , agree that , when our families , our lives and our property is threatened , we will refrain from violent measures of self defence , on the understanding that the government , through its agents , will act on our behalf to defend us from any and all threats that would require a violent response . ” . ok , so let me ask anyone in the uk that has ever needed the ” protection ” of government agencies just how well they’ve been protected ? i can tell you from first hand experience , on more than one occassion , that such protection does not exist and that , by even attempting to get such protection , which has been paid for in your taxes , loss of freedom and many other ways , you are asking for a world of shit to come crashing down around you .
personally , i’m ok with that . if the unwritten , unspoken contract is now null and void , well that’s just fine by me . but i claim back my right to self defense , by any means i deem necessary , in view of the governments breach of contract .
it took me a long time to figure it out but doing the right thing and being a good person doesn’t protect you and yours one bit . there is justice and then there’s the law . don’t ever mix them up ; they are two completely different concepts .
resistance is victory , all glory goes to God .

Oh and the police have a DUTY TO DUE DILIGENCE. Which means IT IS THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW THE LAW. That’s a LAWFUL requirement of our police officers.
People….here’s the thing about your rights, if you don’t know what they are, you have none.
You have the rights that you claim and defend. No one is going to do it for you.
God-Given rights means it’s up to you to protect them until God shows up (looks anxiously at his watch) to do it for you.
In a way, Bush was right when he said the Constitution was just a piece of paper. By which I mean, if the Constitution itself were destroyed, the actual piece of paper burned to ash, your rights wouldn’t burn with it. They were put on paper to express Understanding and to Declare a state founded on these “Self Evident” truthes.
Self evident…these are my Rights because they are my Rights. There’s no debate, take Isaac Newton out of every book and watch the apples drop to Earth nevertheless.

in some places you can’t even have a pair of binoculars, for the bird watchers, the train spotters and so on, I am sure if they see with a pair of binoculars they will tell you, it’s illegal too.
And what was really stupid from that video, is that the police officer (thug) , told him you have committed an offence, and then checks with his sergeant if it’s illegal or not, the sergeant must have said No, but don’t worry will get him on something else.

The first thought that came to mind was the BART shooting. The cops did confiscate cell phone cameras to try to cover it up. But they didn’t get all of them. The ones that survived made it to the net and the news thank God. Because if thous cell phones had been confiscated by the cops that cop would still be free. ( They did try to cover it up before the recordings went public and then had to change there story ) And for me that is the case and point as to why this can not be allowed to happen here.
And….If the cops what people to stop calling them bad names then they need to stop doing bad things….. Sounds simple to me.

January 28th, 2009 at 12:13 pm
This article is a little-overblown on Canada. Policing (assuming it is not the RCMP) is at a municipal level and there is no federal jurisdiction for that (other than RCMP). This would presumably be passed in the Montreal city council and wouldn’t go further. As for the Brits, well unfortunately they will continue to be pinned down (as we evidenced by this and the evil spectacle in the Telegraph – among others) until they expel the financial oligarchy from that country – which would be a complete cleaning of house for the government – inc. house of lords – as well as pretty much the entire London financial sector.

If anything happens in one of the following countries, you know if it happens in one, the others will follow.
USA
UK
Canada
Autralia
UK gets it from Europe and from all of these countries, but the truth of the matter, UK dictates all of the above countries and more, including Brussels.
So if something happens somewhere you can bet your bottom dollar that it will spread and very quickly to other parts.
Everyone is objecting to the NWO, as if it’s something to come, lol WE ARE ALREADY IN IT!!

This is part of the clampdown on PEOPLE. The PUBLIC are considered by the powers that be as *the enemy*, and terrorism is the catch-all “justification” that allows them to pass totalitarian style laws. We posters tend to know this, but 90% of the people out there either do not, or laugh it off as a “conspiracy theory”. They are the ones who seem to enjoy the submission of being herded down the one way street towards global fascism and police state. England is the pilot model for such a society, probably because it is (a) relatively small (b) densely populated (c) an industrialized society (d) an island nation (e) has a long traditional of intrusive, heavy-handed bureaucracy and (f) a somewhat gullible public that will put up with literally anything that gets thrown their way. Will such legislation happen in the USA in future? You bet… all they need is another terrorist attack, and we all know how easily *that* can be arranged.

And why did they stop that young man on the bike?
Hey, if you are a pastor of a church and you’re reading this, go rent the film “Changeling”. We need ministers who will stand in the pulpit and the streets against injustice.
Peace.

I wondered the same thing. Locally I’ve seen a cop spend 20 minutes harassing and ticketing a young girl, either for riding on the sidewalk and/or not wearing a helmet.
Be prepared to wait an hour or more though if you call the cops regarding a serious offense taking place.

On November 22, 2008, at the Oklahoma City End-the-Fed Rally, a Federal officer told me that I had to stop photographing on the city sidewalk. I told the officer that I would photograph anything that I want to.
Then the officer grabbed my camera and tried to take it from me. I wrested it out of his hand and left the area. I had to dodge a snatch van down the street.

Thank You Watson and PP and supporters of the truth. Getting us the info to arm us with what we need to win the infowar is not gonna change cuz of one butthole necktie wearer here and there.
We need police period, not soldiers in the streets. Keep the grey areas clear and Bless those good officers out there who want a better world with true justice , may they return safely home to their families everyday along with us. Hey we gotta know our rights and the police need to know our rights. The dummies who don`t are the ones who have the wrong agenda. We cannot be successful without good law enforcement with the people behind them. Ultimately they are with us. We can point out the unlawful stuff with our cameras to help defeat injustice , this helps you the good police and you know that.. so here we go..on with the story. Again its a few trying to push the immoral unethical legislation in the direction that protects the illegal agenda of totalarianism. Just when we see technology working for the greater good, (eg: bartcop shooting ) this story comes out about taking it away from us, now doesn`t that make sense
As far a the negative counterproductive ones who wish to sabotage our learning facts , *******!@#$%&*# you enemies.
Where are we supposed to find out , the mainstream media??
God Bless Us All

Back in the sixties I was involved with a right wing group. We had a small office here in the San Diego area. The local cops had a man who we knew always hanging around spying. We had it one day and confronted him with a video cam. He looked like Dracula confronting a cross. If you are demonstrating ALWAYS have someone (or several) taping all that goes on. It may save your bacon in the event of a frame up. I know several people saved from charges by having a record of what went on. If they outlaw taking cop’s pictures it isn’t very hard to disguise a camera. Again, use some intelligence. You’re going to need it.
January 28th, 2009 at 7:36 pm
Now if use your camera movie to show pigs breaking the law, YOU will be arrested and the evidence thrown out as illegally obtained. It is a law to better enable criminals to do crimes and answer to nobody.
January 28th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
In Canada they’re purposely hiring brain dead thugs as “law enforcement” officers. Recently in BC, two cops were charged with beating up an innocent man.
http://www.montrealgazette.com.....story.html
I don’t know if there’s such a device available but it would be handy to have a video cam that can instantly upload to a remote site.

The people in the UK dont care. They have their Cars, Corrie, Crisps, Pints and Football(soccer to the rest of us). Their country is going the way of ICELAND and once bankrupt they will start to riot. Since they are disarmed they will either submit or die.
The soccer hooligans may riot but it will be short lived and they will back down.
They are not the U.K. people of the WW2 era. They are not the characters from a Guy Ritchie film. They are guilded sheep. Plain and simple.
Get prepared and your out plans together.

bit of a massive generalisation. dont like cars or corrie dont really eat crisps and cant remember last time i had a pint. Also hate football and yes i do belive the country is going the same way as iceland.BUT and here is the big but, a lot of people are informed and have educated themselves about the coming trouble. I truelly dont believe that the brits will be a push over…some will of course, the sheeple will bleet as they always do, but the hardcore will be up for it……….their is some pretty nasty bastards in the uk and the police ARE fuckin tereffied of them hence allways tooled up and in gangs just like frieghtend pathetic snivelling shits. my spellings pretty bad but i dont think that will get me killed
January 29th, 2009 at 2:25 am
OOPS…gelded. I am a product of the public school system and the constant use of SPELL CHECKER – F7 key.
I much prefer math. Especially when it says that the U.K. make US$1.3T/year GDP and your banks are in the hole for $1.7T currently and there is more to come once the 5 year ARM’s reset this year.
Also Mike, there is a thin line between police and criminal.

dude , i’m still trying to figure out whether or not you’re just trying to trash Brits or if you’re trying to make some constructive point . regardless , my initial reaction was to get large and start defending Britain from the foreign invader . but y’know what ? you’re actually pretty much on the ball . it saddens me more than you know how far in the shit this country is . but here’s the thing . it may work out that us Brits , being in the country where , it is alleged , the instigators of the nwo are housed , could actually end up saving the day after all . don’t believe all the propaganda . there are many of us who still have the balls to do what’s right when it needs doing . it doesn’t always take a gun to do a guns job ! ( but , right now , it would really , really help a lot ! )

What is it that the powers that be always say? “If you’ve done nothing wrong, you’ve got nothing to fear”.
So what is it that the police have got to fear from the odd photo being taken?
January 29th, 2009 at 5:15 am
How many cops are caught on camera by the public commiting crimes very year?
If this becomes law it’s time to start killing cops. With such a law they’re above it.
January 29th, 2009 at 5:18 am
they need to pass this and other repressive laws worldwide and do it quickly, at the moment they are pushing hard but slow and by the time everyone wakes up it will be too late. do it now, so everyone will finally wake up and we can get down to the business at hand and turn the train around.

Why would you take a picture of them they are damn uggly !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
January 29th, 2009 at 8:08 am
Unfortunately some people here still don’t get it..
this is due to the bart shooting
The videotaped killing of an unarmed black man by a transit police officer here has inflamed long-running tensions between police and many African-American residents.
Public outrage at the New Year’s Day slaying of 22-year-old Oscar Grant intensified as grainy footage of the shooting played repeatedly on television and the Internet, while the officer remained free and not charged with any crime.
THEY SNATCHED PEOPLE’S CAMERA ON THE SCENE TO TAKE AWAY EVIDENCES SO THEY CAN MAKE UP LIES AFTER BUT NOW THAT PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT THAT FACT, THEY MAKE A LAW TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL TO TAKE A PICTURE..
BUNCH OF NUTTERS..WHAT THIS WORLD COMING TO?

Exactly. Only a government bent on repression and tyranny would even consider such a law.

The next time you catch a cop on camera unlawfully being someone and come forward with the footage you’ll be arrested for filming a police officer. And the BBC will say it’s a good thing.

The losers in government will never admit the truth. A terrorist in uniform is more dangerous than a group of free lance terrorists.
Stalin, Hitler, Mao. Look it up folks. If you’re afraid of a bunch of disorganized, stateless and underfunded terrorists you’re a total fool to not be afraid of terrorists getting hold of your government.
There is nothing on the planet more dangerous than a rouge government.
January 29th, 2009 at 10:12 am
See!!!
Guilty of terrorism before any evidence has been brought forward.
Guilty before any chance of due court process.
Terrorism is the greatest tool used against mankind because it is everyone except the authorities enforcing it.
When government conducts terrorism it is called U.S. and Israel policies.
They can use terrorist tactics to fight terrorism.
This would help explain why the government deals drugs to combat drugs.

You mention the name of the British legislation under review. What is the name of the Canadian one? Are you aware that Canada has its own legislative process and government, and that laws passed in Britain don’t become de facto law in Canada?
January 30th, 2009 at 12:07 pm
Laws passed in Quebec City and Montreal are not ‘canadian laws’. They are local laws. Municipalities can pass whatever laws they want, it’s up to the courts to determine if those laws are constitutional. If someone were to challenge these laws a judge could override them and through common law legalize these acts. Like the United States, the Supreme Court has final say over what laws are constitutional, but someone has to challenge them first.

I’m the first to complain if the police step out of line, but the guy filming the two British police officers was just being awkward and rude. There’s no excuse for that.
As far as I can see they behaved in a very restrained manner despite considerable harassment and provocation.

i hope this doesn’t spread to the usa. in california it’s agianst the law to give a cop the finger they deserve.

The End Is Nigh.
It’s a tool of totalitarianism. And, those half-assed lesgislatures just making up more laws that go along right. IT’S NOTHING NEW!
Corrupt cops just mugging us! Arresting photographers for making ‘terrorist threats’??!?!? BULL#%$@! They’re just doin’ their dirty work! But, this is absolutely ABSURD! STOP PASSING UP CRAP LAWS AND START SETTING US FREE!! We’re just good law-abiding citizens who are trying to stand up for our God-given rights!
The UK < Canada < USA????
We’re under the police state, and in other words, oligarchy.
February 4th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
This is worse than sticking you with a dull knife and then twisting it sideways!!!
It is things like this that are slowly driving some ( like myself ) to a simmering RAGE!!!
How long does anyone think before that RAGE lets loose upon the oppressors’ minions, that the criminals in government run in fear for their pathetic, illusory lives!
Their may only be a small percentage of us who are willing to stand firm and fight, but that few of us may be all it takes to completely bring to the ground this NWO-VIRUS we call “globalism”!
How many more pin-pricks are you going to stand for, before you finally have had enough?
** – Like I said: “The RAGE is building! Peace is NO LONGER an option!”
“If you invade my home,
Take my children,
Hurt or kill any loved one of mine,
Take/Destroy any of my property ( to include my pay ),
Threaten me or the ones I love,
Abuse me or the ones I love,
In short: If you continue this evil upon me,
I SHALL DESTROY YOU IN WITNESS TO GOD!!!”
If the people of this world wince at such thoughts, and scurry away and shirk off their duty ( to themselves, others, and to their God ), then they deserve to die at the hands of their masters! Peace is NO LONGER an option, when life and limb is at stake!
This issue, as presented, should tell all that time FOR THEM is about to run out. Stop “looking to God” for help! BE God’s instruments to help all!
“Be the change that you seek.”

Oh, so this is the law the perps using V2K voice hearing are talking about. They told me the new law will keep authority involved in organized stalking safe from public exposure.
Since the UK has so many surveillance cameras, why anyone can not put “another one” in public? And what if someone in police uniform is not really a police officer?
Will this law make bank robbers wear police uniform for their crime to avoid anyone filming them? I bet criminals will use fake cop identities to reduce witnesses.
And how can a photographer take photos at some kind of event with full of police guarding?
February 10th, 2009 at 8:47 pm
Welcome to the “clubbed” mates. Police over here are like the SS they’re wearing masks now. Of course it’s illegal if we wear masks. Pretty soon the people are going to have to organize and do away with every one of these vermin. The good cops better start quitting or speaking out as they are going to be in danger. How much more are we going to take?
