A new Gallup poll shows American citizens believe that the US federal government squanders over half of every dollar the taxpayers pay to the government.
According to the survey, ordinary Americans estimate that the federal government wastes 51 cents of every dollar it spends, the Gallup polling organization reported Monday.
The question put to the survey respondents was, “Of every tax dollar that goes to the federal government in Washington D.C., how many cents of each dollar would you say are wasted?”
The result marks a new high since 1979 in public belief about the extent of waste by the federal government in the expenditure of taxpayer money. The lowest government waste figure reported in a similar public survey was 38 cents per taxpayer dollar, recorded in 1986.
Gallup says Americans consider the federal government as the most wasteful of taxpayer money, which is followed by state governments and local governments in terms of dollar waste.
According to the poll findings, American people also believe that state governments in the US squander 42 cents and local (city and county) governments misuse 38 cents of the taxpayer dollar.
Gallup says over time, Americans have come to the belief that all levels of government waste tax earnings, dissipating at least 11 cents more on the dollar in comparison with the year 1979.
This comes as a recent public opinion poll conducted by Gallup in late August showed that 63 percent of American citizens have a negative view of the government of US President Barack Obama.
Obama’s job disapproval rating has also reached an all-time high of 55 percent, according to another survey carried out by the Gallup.
The decline in American citizens’ view of the federal government began in 2004 as concerns rose over George W. Bush’s mismanagement of the Iraq war, which broke out after the US and Britain joined forces to invade the country in 2003. Other military forces of major US allies later committed their forces to the US-led invasion.
