US soldiers kill an Iraqi couple for unknown reasons to mark the latest of ordeals the US military presence has imposed on Iraqis since the invasion of the country in 2003.
Iraqi interior ministry officials said that US soldiers opened fire on a civilian vehicle at around 1:00 p.m. (1000 GMT) Wednesday for reasons that are still under investigation.
The US military declined to confirm that the couple had been killed by American soldiers, and only said that a joint US-Iraqi probe had been launched into the causes of the incident.
The driver of the car, identified as Omar Abdullah, was reportedly travelling in a white saloon car when US bullets ripped through his vehicle.
In September 2007, guards from US private security firm Blackwater, now renamed as Xe, targeted and killed 14 Iraqi civilians and wounded 18 others in Baghdad.
The incident which sparked outrage among Iraqis aroused even more controversy last December when a US District Court dropped all charges against the guards, saying the defendants’ constitutional rights had been violated.
