North-east Japan has been swamped by a major tsunami – and the entire Pacific region is now on alert. There’s a major search and rescue operation underway in Japan. 300 hundred military planes and 40 ships have joined the mission to survey the damage. It’s the north east of Japan which has been worst hit by the massive tsunami caused by the biggest in nearly a century and a half.
At the centre the city of Sendai, where the worst is feared for hundreds perhaps thousands of people. The official figure of dead is currently 95 and rising.
