Hundreds of troops were today engaged in a desperate search for a British soldier kidnapped by the Taliban.
The man – who has not been named – was apparently seized during a fierce gun battle with insurgents yesterday evening in the Babaji area of southern Helmand.
However there were conflicting reports today of how the man disappeared, with suggestions that he had either been ‘delivered’ to the Taliban by Afghan soldiers or went missing while swimming with them in a river.
A Taliban source claimed he has been executed. It has also been claimed by an unnamed witness that two Afghan soldiers delivered the British man to a insurgent commander in Nahr-e Saraj.
