Washington Post Columnist Advocates Abolishing the Second Amendment

The New York Giants won an important football game yesterday, throttling the Washington Redskins 23-7 on the Redskins’ home field. The victory raised New York’s record to 11-1, all but assured the Giants of a division title and put them in excellent position to wrap up home-field advantage for the NFC playoffs.
Of course, the lead story in all the New York papers today had nothing to do with the Giants’ victory. The New York Times, hardly known for sensationalism, led its sports page with the following headline: “Burress to Surrender to Authorities.”
That’s because Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress walked into a New York nightclub on Friday night carrying a gun and somehow managed to shoot himself in the leg. News reports indicate he wasn’t licensed to carry the firearm.

The owners and players should agree that players can’t own handguns. That won’t prevent players who like to hunt from hunting. If a player feels unsafe for any reason, he can ask his team to provide security — all NFL teams have good-sized security forces, most of them retired law enforcement officials — or they can hire their own security guards.

Now, let’s not start screaming about the Second Amendment. To begin with, the amendment should be abolished — a sensible interpretation of the amendment is that it was written to allow the people to raise a militia for protection and to hunt for food. Clearly no one needs to raise a militia these days, and those who hunt for a living can be licensed to do so.
It would be nice if President-elect Obama had the time to focus his energies on repeal of the Second Amendment, but he first has to deal with a broken economy and the incredibly wrong-headed war started by his predecessor. What’s more, the issue of gun rights causes almost as much screaming from the right as abortion rights, the irony being that those yelling the loudest about the right to life are usually those yelling almost as loud about their right to carry weapons that kill.
The Second Amendment isn’t going to be abolished any time soon. That should not prevent the NFL — and all sports leagues — from taking handguns away from their players. It is no more unconstitutional to say players can’t own guns than it is to say they must be subjected to drug testing when there is no evidence they have used drugs, or saying they can be fined for speaking their mind about officiating.
So let’s not use the constitution as an excuse. If the NFL owners are concerned about guns — and they should be — they need to make the union understand why it is important that it be concerned, too. Baseball, basketball and hockey should do the same thing. The leagues need to do something about their players and their guns.
In all likelihood though, nothing will happen. People will scream about the Second Amendment and safety. Neither of which has anything to do with what happened to Plaxico Burress last Friday night.

Someone needs to teach this columnist what it means to be without. If the second amendment goes away the guns will still be there, we just wont have anything to protect ourselves with.

Sorry, you american suckers, this is already a done deal under Obama. Not the actual repeal, that really wouldn’t succeed while America still exists in any semblance of its original form. However, Obama has a plan just as good. All private hand-gun ownership to be outlawed, and be replaced with a system of local holding for firearms, at facilities run by local Obama controlled militia-flavoured national organisation.
So, Obama will hold your guns for you, and if you wish to use them, you will have to join Obama’s local ‘defence’ force and agree to be one of Obama’s little police state thugs. Bingo, bango, Obama meets the written needs of the 2nd amendment, and you are all screwed. Now owning a gun will not mean being prepared to act AGAINST government tyranny, but having sworn to act in FAVOUR of government tyranny.
Obviously, you are to suffer a little ‘publicity stunt’ to make you (or actually your women-folk) demand that Obama implement his little plan. The stunt will cost the lives of quite a few innocent americans, but Obama would happily spill the blood of millions if it gave him any substantial gain in life. In this case, they won’t even feel a twinge of conscience, since too many of them will convince themselves they are acting for the ‘greater good’.
Remember, guys, american ‘democracy’ effectively means what women voters want, women voters get (don’t believe me?- go look at the statistics of voting patterns). If Obama and those behind him succeed, it will be because the voice of america’s women has spoken. Women are most influenced by emotional propaganda methods. Males will fall for the ‘logical’ propaganda that will claim that only by having males formally and regularly trained at ultra local facilities within their own communities, can they then go all ‘Chuck Norris’ when those dirty ‘terrorists’ or ‘psychopaths’ turn up intent on hurting their loved ones.

What I find amazing is that some people would actually be taken in by this tripe and share his opinions. It isn’t even internally consistent. He denounces carrying a weapon into a crowded bar but then says that the player should hire a security guard to go around with him… and that guard wouldn’t be carrying a gun into the same crowded bar?

Makes sense if you realize that one reason they want to abolish it is to protect the security force they have in place i.e the police. If people have weapons they feel self reliable, that which they have been trying to take away from us.
That means the police get less calls, that means the bonds that are placed on individuals that go to jail become worthless as less and less are going to jail. Point, Job Security. Another reason, they cant beat on patrons and force their ideas or views on them if they have the ability to come get your ass while your sitting still in your squad car.
Destroy the peoples independence, destroy their image of themselves, when they no longer know who they are or what to do, they will come to those in power for guidance.

They can only have them if you let them take them. The second amendment may be about guns, but what about the 4th. They would have to abolish your right to say no to illegal search and seizure of your property. Remember, to be secure in your persons papers and property.
If someone is demanding you give them your property, or attempts to take it without your permission, regardless of the de facto authority exercising the attempt, you have the right UNDER GOD, to send his/her ass straight to hell without question, in Gods name.
That of which I am completely prepared to do, not as an American, but as a soldier of the lord.
Me and my house, serves the lord, and will go down in flames before It/I dishonors the code and pledge that we have made to our lord in return for salvation and everlasting life.

Let’s face it folks ALL the CRIMINALS in the US whether they root from civilian sources, the Military Industrial Complex, International Bakers or governmental authority want to confine the Constitutional capasity of their intended victims (The US citizenry) to defend themselves. The US Constitution says each American citizen has the right to keep and bear arms. That by definition is to posess and carry a gun. That does not mean self defense should be confined to one’s home either. The bogus laws that currently conflict with this long exercised concept of personal protection are obviously acting with unconstitutional authority. Without a Constitutional amendment the laws which place restrictions on gun rights are illegal.
Sadly these unconstitutional regulations are forcefully implemented by those in our country who have little respect for the law or the protections within the Constitution themselves. Thses lawless elements within the US government who promote such policies, policies that purposely interfere with the execution of the supreme law of the land are laughable. Their agenda is not American in spirit or works. These communist fools will never choose to recognize the collective authority of the American populace.

Well Mr. Feinstein you can give up your guns if you want. What will you do when you have a gun in your face and the police are nowhere to be found? The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting. It’s all about protecting our freedoms from the tyranny of government but someone like yourself who knows nothing about history probably can’t understand that. Maybe you can ask all the people who were murdered in regimes with very strict gun control how they feel about the issue.

You are right. The 2nd Ammendment has nothing to do with the Burress incident. Obviously, Burress is to stupid to carry a firearm. Repealing the 2nd Ammendment wont stop irresponsible idiots from doing stupid things. And unfortunatley, passing law against “Being stupid” means someone gts to decide what is stupid an what is not. Therefore, all we can do is laugh at the dummy and be gratefull that his stupidity didn’t hurt anyone but himself.

The right to bear arms is basic to the ability of a nation to be free from their own government walking in and rounding them up.
This right is NOT one GIVEN by a government, this right is a right RETAINED by the People. You remember the People of the United States? Those are the people that own the government..not the other way around. Since when do EMPLOYEES tell their boss what the contract they have sworn to uphold and defend can contain? If they cannot protect the Constitution, which is THEIR JOB AND SACRED OATH TO DO..they need to step down NOW.
Ask any nation that has given up their arms…are they free? The answer is NO! Ask the English..they are not a free people any longer..and still they murder each other just as fast without guns as with guns.
For anyone suggesting to further gut the Constitution I have one thing to say to you.

I have another suggestion regarding giving up guns. I suggest all those that have given up their rights to have a gun…be forced to put their name and address on a nice list. I am sure that list will be very attractive to thugs, murderers, perverts, thieves and rapists everywhere.
If you are not willing to be on the unarmed list yourself…then SHUT UP about other peoples rights to protect their homes and families.

If citizens cannot own guns , then guns should not exist period, if only they can be placed into the hands of authority, cause this opens up a door to corruption,greed,control, and slavery.
Nobody on this earth should have power over another human being and this is the way it should be. I think it would be easier if this whole civilization would be washed off and eliminated from the face and the middle of this planet, cause the real bastards are hiding deep down in middle earth like pansies. Because we all know that if we ban guns the world would magically become a perfect eutopia where we all hold hands and live in harmony. We’ll suddenly cure cancer and AIDS, We’ll stroll barefoot down polution free beaches hugging everyone we meet.
Yeah, until we realize it was’nt the guns but the negative media, so we’ll curb freedom of the press just a little. And when that does’nt work it must have been the muslims, so we’ll ban that pesky freedom of religion. I agree with what you are saying; believe it or not, I’m also a proud liberal! I’m not one of the extremist jackasses though. I have enough sense to know that the only one who’s going to take care of me is me, and I have an extensive handgun collection. As a woman in today’s world I’d be a complete fool not to! If anyone tries to home invade me, I have a nice little suprise for them courtesy of Desert Eagle. The real problem isn’t my owning guns; it’s the stupid society that we live in that has the people, especially the stupid, convinced that the road to becoming someone is paved with material possessions. The more that you can grab, by whatever means necessary, the better a person you are. This attitute was recently brought into the limelight by the trampling death of the security guard at Walmart. I can’t even begin to imagine how anyone could think that t.v.’s and cheap crappy clothes are worth a man’s life. Until things change, I’m keeping my guns, Mr. Feinstein.

I personally am not going to fear for my life for a hour and a half waiting for the cops. I won’t dial 911. I don’t think paramedics are going to do anything for the person that invades my home. When my heart quits pumping then they can take my weapons.

Every one should be able to own a gun for when the shit comes down, but walking around with a gun should be illegal , too much problems come from that, and people who do should be punished hard because mostly it are criminals.
